Went to the gem and mineral show today in Richmond. Found all kinds of cool stuff. Took my eye off hubby and nearly became a singing bowl owner . Then he found these. No clue but I will tell you that I don't buy what the guy told him they were. So what is this stuff? Any ideas?

How hard/brittle is it? In my valley there are layers of (I think the English word for it is shale or slate), which looks like this when it's been deposited in locations rich with iron.

Looks like iron-oxide concentrations But I am rarely right when it comes to ID I agree on the iron-oxide. From the side view, it almost looks like a quartzite from Virginia that I was introduced to at a flint-knapping event. Very grainy and rusty colored. Rick B

Ok... So just for giggles, hubby was told these are north African petrified wood.
I'll get a hardness and streak here shortly.

One spot was a 3 and another was a 6. Streak is a medium dark brown.

Not petrified wood from anywhere, alikat218 nailed it I reckon, concretions. An iron rich mud has dried and hardened and cracked, the cracks have allowed water and air to oxidise the iron and bind the grains near the cracks.

Look like concretions to me. However these can be interesting, especially since they can and sometimes do form around animals/plants that become fossilized. So they are worth looking at closely in the center with a strong lens.
