Last fall was my start to this great hobby and I quit for the winter and now it's warming up enough to sit outside with a hose washing rocks so it's game on again. I used a UV-18 for stages 2, 3 and 4 and I was running ceramic media in all stages. I had some bowl wear but I also get slurry going down the center around the threaded rod and under the bowl and making a huge mess. I thought about using a release agent in the center of the bowl and trying to make a silicone plug to seal it off. Does anyone else have this problem or is this self taught guy an idiot and doing something really wrong? I kind of want to figure it out before I get started this season. I know I will need to buy a new bowl from last years mistakes. Thanks, Jeff

I bought a batch of flat washers the hole size the same as the center rod diameter, don't remember the exact size. I took my UV-18 to Home Depot and just started trying various size washers until I found a flat, reasonably hard washer that goes under the nut. No drips so far. A dozen of these washers is very inexpensive. I don't think I spent $2.

Flipper, I use a UV-18 and solved the problem by using a larger metal washer and compressed a large rubber washer underneath for a tight fit. I keep a wrench handy and make sure the nut stays and is tight each time I open it. I use a high density foam for the rubber replacement under the bowl. My neighbor gets the material from the trash bin at the computer company where he works. The foam also self seats by the bowl weight and is regularly replaced.
