Cleaning out a 15lb. barrel of mixed Jaspers in 46/70 S.C. today expecting about a third of the load would be pulled out and ready to move on. Instead of 3-4 pounds of rocks I think we pulled about 6 oz. Slurry was nice and grit was broken down. 20 Tablespoons of 46/70 were put in two weeks ago and only about 1 tablespoon was left and this had broken down to around 120/220 so it was definitely due/overdue for a check anyhow. There is an excellent mix of sizes as well, they just need more time. Do not have a second to spend on grinding them as there are too many other rock related activities going on here. We pulled 3-4 pounds of Serape Jasper out a couple of weeks ago and got them into the vibe and they turned out awesome, was just hoping to repeat that. All in time.
Tumbling rocks just like life- you can make your plans and life (or rocks in this case) will just laugh. Back in the barrel to grind away, who's laughing now!

RockInDad -
Too bad about the mixed jaspers. The amount of very course grit you used seems like overkill to me.
I only use about 1 tb of #60 per pound of rocks. I wonder if the possibly excess grit you used was working more like a ceramic media than a grinding grit. Did you use any ceramic media?
If you still are disappointed with the results, and don't have time to retumble, you can send them to me. I'll pay the postage, tumble them in my 15#/20# tumblers, keep half and send the other half back to you. Deal?

They're back in the tumbler, just don't have time to shape them on the grinder at the moment. 20 tablespoons is 1 1/4 cups for what was probably 13 pounds of material- about 1 1/2 tablespoons per pound. For a two week run I think that is reasonable and like I said there was very minimal grit left over and even that was reduced in size quite a bit. It's just some tough stuff and needs more time. I'm just venting and being impatient. Al

I've been recharging my coarse grit weekly with pretty good results.

I re-charge coarse grit weekly and often only pull a stone or three to move on to the next stage. Sometimes tests my patience but mostly I expect it.
