After a bit more than twenty years of wanting one, I finally bought myself a rock tumbler! A cheap harbor freight single barrel, but it's a start. My first batch (a beginner's mix) is going to burnish today. My two year old is already excited to go find more rocks for the next batch. I have a pound of rough lapis i'd like to try soon.

Welcome einholt! The kiddie is hooked, you're hooked, it's all downhill from here Downhill in a good way - as in smooth sailing and lots of things to look forward to.

Well, the first attempt turned out well enough. Quite a bit of bruising during the polish and burnish stages. I was using ceramic media during those, but I think I'll try plastic in the future. I read somewhere about having success with tile spacers. Seeing as I have a bucket of those, I might give that a try.

Took me long enough to get that photo to load, my son appreciated the stones. Especially the petrified wood.

from Virginia! That batch looks great! I love to hear about parents involved in this hobby with their kids. Seems to be the majority reason for getting into it. I hope ya;ll have a blast! And, definitely keep posting- we're here to help and encourage.

Welcome from Northern Arizona!
You got a nice shine for your first batch. Glad to hear your kiddo is already turning into a rockhound.
