I believe this is a grey trapiche sapphire. Any other ideas? All comments appreciated. Thanks. 3 by Steve Gantt, on Flickr

May be sapphire/corundum, but I don't see the spoked trapiche pattern.

Ah, that probably wouldn't be a good example with which to compare. I don't see spokes in that piece, either. The 2 lines I see in that piece look more like part of normal corundum crystal hexagonal growth pattern. If it doesn't have wheel-like spokes, then it is not a trapiche.

Any idea what this stone is in that case? It may still be sapphire/corundum (even though not a trapiche). I've seen sapphire cabs that looked similar. If corundum, it should be easy to test. Try a scratch test using a piece of chrysoberyl or topaz. If either of those can scratch it, it is not sapphire.
