Hope the pic posted correctly. I'm very new to everything rock related so Looking for help in Identifying this material. It's pretty soft stone and creates soapy bubbles when cutting w tile saw. Picked it up early April at the big rock sale in rusk tx so no clue of where it was found. . Any help would be much appreciated !

thank you! Shows how little I know about rocks as I always assumed onyx only came in black variety. Thanks again!

I agree, travertine that somehow still gets sold as "Onyx" (sort of like most of the stuff hawked as "Smoky Topaz" isn't topaz, but brown quartz deceptively marketed). "Onyx" properly is agate with parallel, flat banding (except when the banding is red or red-brown, in which case it is sard, or sardonyx). So-called "Black Onyx" is also a misnomer - almost none of it started out as onyx, but is just plain chalcedony dyed black by soaking alternately in sugar and then acid baths.

How hard is it? Hard like Agate or soft like Calcite? Calcite will scratch with a knife or file, Agate wont.
If it's soft then likely flowstone calcite from a limestone cave. hard then Agate.

Its extremely soft. Shaped the above piece with a dremel in matter of just a few minutes. Did some reading on marble onyx (think that's what they called it) and seemed to match up to this piece. Hardness down around 3 vs regular onyx. Now just have to do some reading on best way to polish it
