Hello!! I'm looking at getting into rock tumbling and rock hounding with my two children (7 and 5). My son, Joseph (7) absolutely LOVES crystals. He wants to sell tumbled stones as Worry Stones at his school as a fundraiser and wants to put them in our container garden. I grew up searching for agates and quartz with my Dad in Oregon and would love to get my son into it as well. I have never done any rock tumbling... so this should be interesting. I've been researching tumblers, I'm just trying to decide what to start out with (3 lb or 6 lb for larger sizes).
I'm hoping at some point my son might want to take over this account to ask questions.
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Welcome to the forum to both of you. Go ahead and jump on over to the Rock Tumbling section for your questions. You'll get more direct answers over there. Sometimes the questions get lost in the introductions, and you'll probably have additional questions as the answers come in anyhow.

Welcome, I'm sure you'll get all kinds of good advice, the more questions you ask. As for your first question, go with either a 6 lb. tumbler or larger. Maybe even a dual 6 lb. tumbler. At any rate, there is not much grinding action in a 3 lb. tumbler and you will be waiting forever for a batch to get done. It will kill any enthusiasm, young or old. This is a patience game, no matter what, but best to give yourself every advantage.

Welcome from Florida . I totally agree with @garage Rocker ‘s assessment. You will see much more progression with the larger tumblers to keep enthusiasm level high. After using the 3 lb barrels and still into it, you will purchase the larger tumblers anyway. Unfortunately, many are discouraged after running the smaller tumblers and stop trying. Just my opinion but best of luck in what ever you decide. Hope to see results from your tumbles. Jeff A

Welcome Caroline! I grew up rock hounding with my Dad in Oregon as well - such great memories! I'm sure Joseph will have wonderful memories of his time with you, too

Welcome from Arizona.
My mother had a tumbler when I was a wee little kid...fond memories much later in life inspired a fabulous hobby.
