Very much a newbie here with tumbling rocks. I inherited my fathers rock tumbler. I recently moved to Michigan and found a hobby I love, collecting Petoskey stones. Lived in Florida for years and collected shells . I guess I am just meant to walk the waters edge with my head down looking for treasures. I have collected many Petoskey stones from the west side of Michigan already. I have snooped enough on this site to know they can be tumbled. My first attempt has been to start some stones in fine 600 grit for 3 days . Opened and rinsed them and was amazed how good they looked already. I just don’t know what to do next ? I see I’m not the only one with an interest in them. I hear there is a recipe out there that others have had success with ? Looking forward to learning more.

Boy did you end up in the right place! There are some fantastic tumblers here from your neck of the woods who are very much into Petoskey stones. Start searching and reading, you've got a tumbling library at your fingertips.
Oh yeah, Welcome from NY!

Welcome to RTH. SE Michigan here. Petoskey stones are great but they are a tough one to get right in the tumbler. Pre-tumbling like you did to 600 grit and then hand polishing with aluminum oxide and Zam works great. The majority of the work will have been done by the tumbler.

Welcome... I also inherited my Dad's tumbler about ten years ago, he bought it in 1977, it's a Lortone and it's still tumbling rocks... ENJOY!
