Hello from what I assume is about the worst state in the union to rock hound in, with a few notable exceptions. I've been rock hounding since I started eating them as a toddler. (I've since changed my diet.) I think I made my first trip to Franklin NC at age 8 and it was all downhill from there. I got introduced to lapidary in 2007, when I visited a club about 2 hrs away to cut a Franklin stone for my Fiancé for a wedding gift. I didn't have my own equipment so, except for annual trips to Franklin, that hobby was on the back burner. I had the sawmill, boats, woodworking, geocaching etc to keep me busy. I finally picked up a Highland Park A50, turned an antique bench grinder into a quite serviceable flat lap and purchased a project Great Western 18" slab saw and FranTom combo unit (All this month). I'll be asking a lot questions about all of them and posting pics I'm sure. I leave for Diamond Hill, little pine, gem mountain, rose creek, Cherokee and possibly chunky gal in a few days so there will be a chronicle of that adventure to post too.
A week after that, there is an adventure on Santa Catalina, where I read they have a rare blue schist, and then a trip to Ruck's pit in October.
I figured with all that going on, I should join a community where I can learn and share.

Welcome from Destin, Florida. I agree with your assessment of rockhounding in the Sunshine State. My wife and I also go to the Franklin, NC shows. They have one coming up in late July. I plan to be there. What part of Florida are you in?

Welcome to RTH. We can't wait to see your trip reports! I lived in Jax, Orange Pak and Pensacola (Navy). Never did pick up any cool rocks, but then there aren't any here in Va Bch, either.

I wish the timing of my trips was such that I could make it.

I did pick up some cool fossilized coral not too far from Jax the other day. Along the Suwanee at White Springs. Once piece had the center solidifying into chert? and it polished up nice. It's solid, not hollow like the picks I've seen of the agatized coral from the Tampa area. I'll have to post a pic at some point.

I still have a house about 25 minutes SW of you in Homosassa Springs and get down there 8 or 10 times a year. We plan on settling there eventually.welcome to the forum.

Still waiting on that trip report from @ocklawaboy . I hope you had a wonderful time! I also liked the “Freezer” reference for boiled shrimp in your earlier post. For those (almost all) who don’t understand that reference...The Freezer is a small quaint fishhouse/restaurant directly on the Homosassa River. The seafood don’t get any fresher than than offered there. ocklawahaboy
