Hello to all from St Helens! I am technically not a lapidary - more of a rockhound in search of guidance. I am extremely interested in carving gemstones using power. I am an experienced wood carver focused chiefly on waterfowl and birds in general. I have also worked with softer stones such as soapstone (Gizzly bear) and pipestone. I have a good array of tools including a Dremel 4000, a RAM microcarver, a Foredom H series flexshaft setup, and various files, rifflers, and the like.
I have just joined and haven't done a thorough search of the forums yet. I will be looking for advice on carving gemstones and am especially interested in working with obsidian, agate, and jasper as well as softer stone including alabaster. I hope to share what limited knowledge that I have and to learn from the experience of others here. I also am seeking a collecting partner who is free to wander around Oregon.

Welcome from Northern Arizona!
There are some good carving threads on the carving board. Have a gander at those. I also highly recommend the Henry Hunt books.

Welcome from just down the road in Vancouver WA. Any time you want to hang out and try carving a rock or 2 you're welcome to visit. I have several flex shafts, cabbing arbors, and also want to turn an older single arbor machine into a stationary carver.

WOW! Ask and you shall receive! I truly appreciate all of this good advice and the warm welcomes. Rockoonz, I will definitely take you up on that generous offer to visit. I'll PM you for details.
Hummingbirdstones, I am unfamiliar with the Hunt books but will change that soon. Again, thanks for the "tip."
and to everyone else, thank you for taking the time to post. I hope to get to know my way around the site and to make new friends. I am always looking for an excuse to collect and am willing to go searching for material. If Oregon is within your travel ability I am always willing to consider field trips across the state.

Thanks! I'm working my way through the threads as suggested. The Hunt books are, shall we say, spendy. I'll definitely keep my eye open for copies as I proceed.

You can get one of them here for the original price. They are out of print now and that's why they're so pricey. I'd definitely pick this one up and keep looking for the other.
