I received an email from Teri Smith reporting the Stillwell Ranch in Marathon, TX has been sold and rock hounding will end.

Dang...just got into the hobby and next spring was hoping to get to do a trip. Seems I better get serious about hounding the few remaining places left in texas before they are all gone

Sad. Thanks for the update. Was that on one of her tours?

Yes, plus people could rock hound without being on one of Teri's hunts.

I've got to think that equivalent opportunities exist in Texas but it will take perserverence, smooth talking and luck to find them.

Stillwell Rch is basically a Rio Grande gravel deposit with the typical wood, jasper and agate you find from there to Falcon Dam. Still a lot of places to hunt Rio Grande gravel in south Texas. We recently took a short wildflower drive to the area and found a good amount of cutting material in bar ditches along some of the gravel roads. Also opportunities in some of the commercial gravel pits in the region....Mel

And wondered if access to similar material was still readily available.
