I have finally convinced Conn to take a little vacation!! No Caribbean for us this year we are heading to Jackson, Wyoming!! An I’m super excited. I’m really trying NOT to turn this into a 5 day Rockhounding trip an it be more of a Husband/Wife reconnect trip BUT a day won’t hurt 🤷♀️. So after reading some geological reports, buying some different types of atlases, I’d still like some input from people that have Rockhounded there. Reports show a good quantity of Red Horned Coral in a formation in Snow Mountain near where we are staying. Any WYOMING MUST HAVES?? Spill It Guys! @catmandew y’all ever spend time near there?

Hey good luck Mel!!! The elk should be bugling, if so it's a sound and sight to see!

Better head there soon - snow and mountain country! Beautiful area though with the Grand Tetons not far away, elk, wolves, deer and moose… There are rock material in the areas also.. Agates, granite, mica, etc....

Sorry, haven't hounded that part of the state, but do check the weather very shortly before you travel. Right now it is unseasonably warm, down right hot. However the nightly lows are apt to reach freezing. Scenery and wildlife are both fabulous. Have fun!

I've managed to find several hangovers in Jackson. Can't really help too much with rocks around there, but if you're going to be farther east I can help with a few spots.

Russ I’m trying to make this trip NOT ALL ABOUT ROCKS. It’s killing me. So sorry going to stay within an hour or two of Jackson. Thank You though! Mel, Jackson is a great place to visit. I've never hounded there, but the sights around town are amazing. Enjoy the day in the town square. Knowing you, you'll find plenty of places to shop at. I wish I could recall the name of the breakfast joint we enjoyed there, but I can't. Locals should be able to give you info. Make a point of visiting Grand Teton National Park and also the Mormon Row area. Some of the most classic views/photographs of the Tetons (with barns in the foreground) are from that area. You will have the elk reserve in the area, so visit that as well. Check on road conditions from Jackson Hole/Teton Village into the National park. Looking at a map, I think the road was Hwy 390 (Moose Wilson Rd) . When we took that road, we ended up seeing plenty of wildlife, including moose. We started a hike at one lake (might have been Jenny), but we got driven out about halfway through due to weather. It was a beautiful day to start, but things turned to crap really quickly. Trees were being blown over and whitecaps were on the lake. The ferry system had to do emergency runs to get folks back to port. Short story is stay mindful of the weather. Have fun with your trip.

I was born and raised on the Idaho side of the Tetons. I saw them in the distance almost daily in clear weather, poking their distinctive silhouettes above the eastern horizon.
I last visited Jackson a year and a half ago and was astonished. Instead of the slow-paced little town I recalled from years ago it's grown into a sophisticated place with high-end restaurants and haute coutoure boutiques.
I can't think of any rockhounding spots truly nearby. There's Bitch Creek jade on the Idaho side north of Tetonia in Fremont County. I have no idea of its current collecting status. Maybe someone can post other spots but I recall that general area being relatively barren of hounding spots except in Yellowstone which is a Big No-No.

Mel, it's not clear where you are staying, but it sounds like you are within pretty easy striking distance of The Blue Forest. Really nice petwood and you can usually find some good surface pieces if you don't like digging (which I don't). There are some incredible Green Lake fossil fish digging pay locations down in Kemmerer which is a bit further. I can recommend which is the best if you are interested. Have fun. It's too hot here now, but Fall should start this week and the leaves will color up.

Thanks for replying though.

I don't know anything about rockhounding in Wyoming, but I agree with you about getting dirty is a lot more fun than your husband's potential activities.
Have a good time!

I think your hot and my hot are very different hahaha As orrum mentioned I don’t have a problem digging AT ALL. I’ve been Butt deep in a hand dug hole on a side of a mountain with vegasjames and quite a few other of our members.

Hopefully, you'll get away from Jackson Hole without being talked into buying asymmetrical jeans - no good at all for hounding.
