I actually tripped over this walking through my back yard. Just West of St Louis. It's a little paler, almost beige, in person. It doesn't scratch with a blade, looks a bit like a worn-down version of a botryoidal quartz I picked up a while back.

Very cool! Do you cab or tumble? I can see a very awesome cab made of that with the tops polished. (depending on the size)

About 5 inches by 3, and an inch thick. I mostly tumble, the closest I've come to cabbing is a handful of guitar picks.

It is a Chalcedony rose.

How would one go about polishing this? Would a dremel or hand polishing of some sort be better than trying to use my sanding wheel?

It's as hard as an agate, it can be cut and worked on wheels. It's very hard to get a thick enough cut to work with, due to the narrowness of the rose. I have managed a few 18mm x 13mm rings out of roses about the size of yours. Tend to work the areas of the bubbles that will center in the cabochon. FYI; Tumbled, they look like a chunk of shiny snot, according to my wife.

I found this piece of quartz in the yard, started it in the tumbler and realized I've never seen orange stripes in quartz before. Anyone seen anything like it?

Carnelian is quartz. Maybe it's carnelian.

If you were west of St Louis then it is Missouri Lace Agate.
