Hi all, My name's Dom and I'm new to the website. I recently moved to Rapid City and have become pretty active with rockhounding since I moved here. I have some good spots for tourmaline and quarts crystals. And in finding and familiarizing myself with these spots, I've learned about agate hunting in the grass lands. So far, I've only found a few bubblegum and eye agates. It's been great fun for my dog and I to get outside and explore! That being said, I'm learning that the Fairburn, and even the Teepee canyon agates are elusive! I've scoured the Railroad Buttes and come up empty handed on those two types. I'm hoping that there's someone here that would be interested in letting me tag along on an agate hunt with them. I will be working here for 3 more months, and I'd truly LOVE to find a Fairburn to commemorate my time in South Dakota. Please let me know if any of you would be willing. I really appreciate it, and I got a fancy dinner for you after the hunt if you'd like!

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Hopefully I'll have some nice agates to post on here soon. The snow is really just finishing up and melting away now. I'm sure that once it's finished, it will have exposed some nice ones for the pickin'! Also, I'll get my best tourmaline and quarts crystals ready to be posted. They're beautiful as well. I travel for a living and got lucky landing in South Dakota this time. It's a rock hounder's paradise!

Taylor, I appreciate the link to the Rock Shed. I've been there a couple of times. What a quaint and special little town Keystone is! My boss purchased some aquamarine there for a really good price! We stopped in on our way up to the old abandoned Bob Ingersoll mine. Tons of tourmaline up there!!!

Thanks Fossilman! I'm originally from Oregon. What a beautiful State! I've seen some rockhounds post from around here. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that at least one is about sharing the love! Finding Fairburns is a whole lot more complex and difficult than I'd imagined when starting this journey! Whether I link with some local kind soul or not, I'll be out hounding for sure! My next move is to have my girlfriend drop me and my dog off on the Cheyenne River. The Badlands eventually deposit the agates into the adjacent river and they move southeast along it. Benjamin (my dog) and I can take a nice hike down a few miles in search of agates, jasper, and smiles!

Welcome from Southern California. I'm curious about the tourmaline you mention. Color? Can you post images? I've never heard of tourm from S.D.

Hey there gemdweller. Thx for the welcome. There's quite a bit of tourmaline around the Black Hills. Primarily green and black. There's some beryl as well but it's harder to find. I'll certainly post some pics. I've not done so yet, so give me a minute to learn how to use this system.
