Im not aware of any silica material that is 7+ Pure quartz is 7. So you are saying that a quartz crystal will not scratch it? I won't open the can of worms about what scratches what :-) but no neither my porcelain jasper or a quartz crystal will "scratch" it. Yes I can make it fracture a quartz crystals structure and vice versa but that's a different story to me. I don't think like hardness materials will scratch each other, I think you can force them to fracture each others structure.

There ya go! Based on your description I assume a knife won't scratch it? 7+ mohs so not even close, I'm pretty sure its silica based ; chalcedony but I haven't seen everything by far so I thought I'd throw it out there

No opinion from me without a proper specific gravity. Would be some sweet jade if it's 3+ I have lots of agate/nephrite/jasper to compare it to; I'm pretty sure it's close to that but I'll weigh it soon; definitely not jade from this site although I do get that; nephrite, from the Fraser

I'd agree more of a "stick agate" along the lines of the Turkish material but finer and more detailed. Being so hard to cut, I wonder if these aren't some harder material; corundum? that later infilled with agate? It will be interesting to see more of this

Gemmy

I consider gemmy to mean very solid, unfractured, being able to be worked without having to worry about it falling apart or developing cracks. Some material it also has a meaning as to color or clarity of the material, so it can change with different materials. Dunno if thats the right definition, but thats what I have always considered it to be. Tony I would add for my own personal definition that it hasn't been altered by man in any way shape, form or means, naturally or unnaturally, except; if so desired, to cut or shape it to show off it's best qualities

When you find surface chucks like these, dig, you may find the mother lode. I've found one 12" round so far a followed it in a ways; these came from the slope below it ;-)

I get a hint of this in a couple of others from this site but it's the only one of two from the hundreds I've hounded here that is half and half. This one is about 7.5cm tip to tip and the other is about 3cm.

This is one of my prized redskin agates from my collection that is totally natural and found and sawn by myself. Green common opal and agate formed together in the same vessicule found in SW BC goo.gl/photos/TUxh2GwBZGntyfny6
