jamesp , Do you ever try and recover/reuse grit during cleanouts?
I made a cleanout sink specifically to recover unused grit from my tumbles. The dried out slurry also works to the same effect as adding clay to the mix.

I've been growing a vegetable garden for a few decades now and i never stop learning how to get better return for my efforts. Adding Micro-nutrients is important to sustain garden soil over many years of use. One of the ways to get this into your soil is to add Rock Dust. Thinking I could make this fairly easy in the Tumbler but it may take a while. Crush up a wide variety of stone and put it in the tumbler with a few large stones to help crush everything up.
Just tumble the raw rough rocks in a large tumbler without any grit and a small amount of water. When doing cleanout, filter the slurry through window-screen and add to the garden as-is or dry it out and add it as a powder. Repeat as Necessary . . .

The idea is to use a detergent that won't react with the rock in any way, possibly causing pitting or color change/loss. This means using a mild soap without any additives like a lemon fresh Scent or Softens as it cleans. Ivory and Borax are recommended for these reasons. I also like Dawn dishwashing soap cause it is mild and is a degreaser.

Here is some granite that I stole from a railroad track. Like I said, it looks great tumbled, but not the greatest shine.

The harder the concrete , the better your results should be. Watch the barrel bottoms for pressure buildup, just open and close it to release pressure. Don't be too afraid to try new things in the tumbler, just keep a close watch.
Isn't the foundation of the railroad track made from Granite, that stuff will tumble and look great but very hard to shine up.

The first batch is the Slowest Make sure you go for a full week for each step after Stage 1 Leave all the small stones and flakes in there. They will help polishing the pits and crevices in the rocks

You will change your tumbling method 26 times before you start settling on a regular procedure.

It looks like I might have to build one to fit my needs. As I am new to this forum, would someone be able to direct me to a build your own thread? Build Your Own

If the Power Plug only has a 2 prong (not grounded) connection , then It's not a GFCI problem.
If it blows the Breaker very quickly, then it sounds like a Dead Short and could cause fire or shock if the breaker keeps working. ---While Unplugged--- , Inspect every bit of wiring, redo any terminal strips or wire nuts. Check to see the shaft on the motor turns freely.

You do Not have a problem with grit sticking to the bottom. When your barrel is rolling on the tumbler which side is the bottom then, it's the round side. When you remove the tumbler all the rolling action stops and the grit goes to the bottom flat side. If it was really a problem then it would be collecting on the lid too. When you put the barrel back on the tumbler everything will mix back together in less than a minute.
You are filling the barrels with water properly for stages 2 thru polish, but stage one is the grinding stage and you should use less than half the water. The rocks should be picking up the grit and grinding into each other, you should hear this happening. Too much water and the grit won't stick. When you do your cleanouts, is the slurry thick or watery? You should see something thicker than chocolate milk, if not then reduce water.

I use it in the rotary, not really needed but it's just some extra insurance.

Doesn't Rock Shed give you some kind of discounts when you buy a Tumbler from them ?
