I had good luck tumbling shells in a 3 pound tumbler. Only tried once but was happy with the results. Filled it up about halfway with only shells. Started the process with 120/220 grit and ran it the same way as I would run rocks but only 4 or 5 days per Stage.

EDIT: This is entirely just for running coarse btw.
Hmmmmm
I have the opposite experience with my Lortone 3A and QT66 The 3A seems to be more gentle and I use it for Soft Stones and Shells, or even just when I run small loads. The QT66 will chew through rocks and if it is not full enough, it will Chip, Break, Pit, Bruise everything in the barrel.
It is all about Loading the Barrel. When the barrel is 50% full, it will have the most aggressive damaging effects. When I am trying to be Gentle, I will fill the barrel to 80% full and never worry about it. You won't even need Plastic or Ceramic Beads, just fill it with rocks or glass.
It will even be fairly gentle just filling the barrel to 25% full.

Good point about the Lid Liners I've replace a few of those, always keep a spare available
It helps to take the metal lid and Grind or File down the center bolt a bit so it doesn't stick out so far Then put a few layers of Duct/Duck/Gaff Tape over the bolthead before putting the rubber liner back on This will give you some more life on the liners

Oh Yeah , I am all about big grit.
Started out with a 3 pound tumbler and messed around with a bunch of different grits for my Stage-1 runs. Using #80 or #60/90 grit is about as big as I would get with these 3 pound barrels. After a week there would always be some leftover grit that did not breakdown. I feel there can't be enough weight in rocks to be aggressive enough to wear down larger grits in those barrels.
Now I normally use my Lortone QT66 with the Dual 6 Pound Barrels. Those barrels will breakdown any size of grit in short time. I have even successfully used Ungraded Grit that can have 1/2 inch grit pebbles in it. I like to use the #30 and #36 grits in the 6 pounders. There is nothing left after a One Week Stage-1 run. Am recommending some kind of grit recovery in your cleanout though. My last order for Stage-1 grit was 45 pounds of #30 grit from Kingsley North.

Got a Job promotion over the last week. I've been working at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center for almost a year now as a Museum Guide. Was giving Tours and operating a few space-related amusement rides. Have grown to love this job and working with the general public at the museum has been fabulous, discovered a side of myself that I didn't even know I had. I was a Stagehand doing Sound & Lighting for 40 years. I tried to get into the Audio-Visual department at the museum, but they didn't want me. So I applied for the Museum Technician job and got it right straight away. This technician job involves building, maintaining and repairing all forms of exhibits across the entire place. I will even have a chance at some creative LED artwork too. Full-time and great pay with benefits, I am 65 years old now and I have my first Real Job.

Just checked The Feather River Lapidary & Mineral Society webpage and the contest rocks for 2022 are Lahontan Agate from western Nevada.
Good luck all.
Do you know what rocks they are using for the 2023 contest ?

Grit saver is a slurry thickener The idea is that when the slurry is thicker, it will suspend the grit you are using and coat all the surfaces of the rocks with it Works well in 3 Pound tumblers where the larger grits will just stay in the bottom of the barrel and still be there at the end of the week at cleanout I would only use the Grit Saver and all the methods I mention (Below) in the Course Stage-1 , do Not use it in stage-3 fine or stage-4 polish
Many around here use Plain Clay Kitty Litter to make the slurry thick You can save the Slurry water when you do a cleanout, then dry that out and use it as a thickener Can also use lots of very small pebbles or even just use mud/clay
Here is how to Save and Reuse Slurry forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/99319/grit-slurry-reclaim-use-value

Just put the resin or epoxy on any area that you want to remain Unchanged and tumble. You will need a way to remove it when you are finished.

Since I've been researching the "art resin" procedure on here, I have to ask if you have tried to stabilize the rock with the various methods I've found on this site? At a glance, it seems like your rocks would be the perfect candidates for either stabilizing or the art resin coverage. Perhaps someone more familiar with these procedures could come on here and offer an educated opinion. Let us know what you end up doing. Jim If you fill the cracks and pits with anything, you will preserve them and they will remain unchanged, while the rest of the rock is treated to the abrasives. The only reason you would prevent the tumbling effect would be if there was a feature that you wanted to keep.

So... Its really hard for me to find any F500 Aluminum Oxide Grit in Germany.
Im using regular F500 Silicon Carbide Grit in the pre polish stage and then finally this Aluminum Oxide polish. 500 grit is stage 3 grit which is usually Silicon Carbide, I use #600 SiC for my Stage 3
Prepolish (usually stage 4 of 5) is normally 1000 or 1200 Aluminum Oxide grit Then Polish is Aluminum Oxide, as fine as you can get it
