Thanks for all your tips and welcomes, people. What a lovely forum this is!
Pat, thanks for the tip re. drilling from both sides into the middle... Silly question, but how do you know you're going to meet the hole from the other side if the stone is asymmetrical?

Since I always do what I'm told (!), I'm introducing myself. I'm a beach-aholic and have always collected shells.... I've got tons of them picked up over the years from every and any beach I visit. I've always loved picking up 'interesting stones', too, but have never had the courage (or felt I could afford) to do anything with them. However, I've finally treated myself to a tumbler and have just got my first lot all polished and lovely. Second batch on the go now. Sadly, I live almost as far as it's possible to be from a beach in the UK (in Bedforshire), but insist on getting my beach fix as often as I can. The photos below are of stones I picked up near Blakeney in North Norfolk.... If anyone can tell me what they are (although I've just ordered my copy of 'Pebbles on the Beach') I'd be eternally grateful. I'm going to try my hand at making some jewellery and have a dremel... have successfully drilled through a bit of (what I think is) marble, but melted several bits and broke the stone on the white one pictured in the middle... I'm very excited to be part of this forum and hope to learn a lot...
