Thanks, this is one of the most difficult carvings I have done, the first link is the test piece, learning curve, and yes Robin all the links are free moving- real chain, I used my gryphon ring saw to cut the inner long section but it removed to much material, I will cut the rest with a 1mm straight point and my C40 band saw.

Thanks, good to get feedback, being my first chain its very challenging, I have a diamond band and ring saw they make it easier but most of the inner cuts must be made by hand with my foredom,

Thanks for the good comments, the nephrite jade is from Australia, like most carvers I start with a slab or piece of stone that I think will work for a design either in its natural shape or slabbed to suit, I then rough carve using either a foredom flex shaft, or high speed air tool, hand sand with either diamond or silicone carbide to smooth and remove the scratches, the stone dictates what I use, I use both diamond and oxide polishes, depending on the gem.

Thanks for the great support, I did have pictures of the reverse but removed them from my camera, very difficult to get a picture that done it justice, I sold this carving before it was finished.

Great first try, I carve gems because there are no limitations in shape and design and every piece is a one of a kind, you have taken the first step, the more you do the more you will learn and enjoy this.

Thanks for the great comments, I consider this rhodonite to be the best that ever came from Australia, I have carved very dark red translucent to a pale ping from this deposit, its fine grain and polishes awesome, currently on 600 grit sanding.

Thanks taylor, its a very small piece, can be very difficult when they are this size, its in the sanding process on 220 grit.

Thanks Rob & vegasjames, when I carved my first mobius many years back I also had trouble getting my head around this, I mark out both sides before I start, a solid line on the carved in side and a dotted line to show its on the opposite side.

I live in a region in Australia that has many rhodonite- manganese deposits, we have some of the most bright red massive rhodonite on the planet, I fossic regularly in my region, recently I found a bright orange version, I have seen orange before but not as brigt as this, it may be a type of orange garnet, the dark maroon red is jasper,
