Blitzkreig of colored glass. Mostly high end Italian, some China, Poland, Romania, Turkey. Stainless pan are some less desirable shapes pulled at 3 days. Not paying much, most are insurance claims, lost freight, damaged on clearance racks. Having to manage carefully. Coarse shaping happens fast and makes it easy to grind too much off. Left is Turkey, top 2 Italian, bottom two China, right is Poland. Looking all hand blown except China. Italian is the lion's share of the glass, primary exporter name is Tammaro. There is a rooster part in the bunch. OMG! I had NO idea people did this! I just thought one would tumble rocks and broken bottles! I've never seen anything like this until jamesp posted his broken rooster on a FB page. It was days before I knew he broke it ON PURPOSE!! Might just change the way I shop at thrift stores 😉

This one's hot off the saw. It's a Bed 79 McDermitt egg and my initial reaction was disappointment because it didn't have any plume agate but when I got it washed off and started looking closer holy cow. Almost exactly half of the cut is entirely botryoidal and the other half has a delicate Crystal arrangement. What are the odds of hitting it exactly in the separation like that? I was not using any cutting formula I just placed it in the jig and pushed it to the blade. The Matrix doesn't look like any Bed 79 or McDermitt egg that I've seen previously. I got it from the mine owner so I'm going to ask him to make sure nothing else got mixed in. Wow Tommy! How lucky for you!! Absolutely stunning 😍 What will you do with this beauty? Have you found anything like this before? (Remember, I'm new!!) Socrates said: “ I know one thing: that I know nothing.”

Thanks jamesp, I will try to find some info on grinding with a wheel. I was just wondering if it COULD be done - sounds like it can! I will continue to study tumbling glass methods until I am comfortable moving forward. There is MUCH more than what my pictures show. Sure grinding can smooth edges and can be polished just like rocks. It can be time consuming since its not a fast process. I make a few Bevels now and then, out of 1/4 inch glass, and have to polish some edges on other glass projects with 1/8 stained glass but use a kiln to "fire polish" most of these edges. I also repair Leaded Glass Crystal by removing chips and nicks from edges using diamond wheels and wet belt sander and flat laps with diamond wheels. Lots of options with glass. . Lots of the same stuff used with rocks works with glass too, but from what I see there is more tooling for glass than there is for rocks available. Dremel has Bits that are made to use with glass, and a set of polishing rubeer bits that contain diamond particles as a set with three different grits, used to polish glass small areas and work well on edges using a sponge with water to keep the bit wet. . Have to be careful to not get water in the Dremel and get shocked. Wow! Thank you so much toolnut! I can't wait to start shopping! All I really have is a double 3 lb tumbler from the 80's, a bunch of beautiful, broken glass and a huge desire to turn their sad demise into something not so sad! ☺ Might as well, huh? Or least TRY!! Lol Thanks again!

So maybe some of that on a grinding wheel? I have a LOT of edges to smooth. I guess there is a diamond coated wheel? With a proper face mask, could sand it dry? There are bench type glass grinders that stained glass people use. Some people here put a groove wheel on them and cut a groove in cabs to edge wrap. There are diamond 4 or 5 inch and up hand grinders that some people use. I have the diamond wheel on a hand grinder (probably shouldn't call it a hand grinder or imply that you should grind your hand with it). There are quite a few lapidary supply houses that offer one or both types of grinders. Lol! Yeah, kinda figured one would not use their hand as a hand grinder!! 🤣 Thanks for the info! Maybe even something so simple as a Dremel grinding wheel?

You might try some automotive-type sandpaper wrapped around a popsicle stick. Thank you so much! So maybe some of that on a grinding wheel? I have a LOT of edges to smooth. I guess there is a diamond coated wheel? With a proper face mask, could sand it dry?

I'm wondering if there is a way to just smooth the broken side. ? You might try some automotive-type sandpaper wrapped around a popsicle stick. Thank you so much!

Grinding and smoothing with wheels is a much different route than tumbling Beverly. I suppose my forte is just tumbling. Thanks jamesp, I will try to find some info on grinding with a wheel. Are you a Republican, a Democrat, or a Southerner? This little test will help you decide: Scenario: You’re walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a Terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges at you… You are carrying a 1911 chambered in .45 ACP, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? ****************************** Democrat’s Answer: Well, that’s not enough information to answer the question! What is a 1911 and what does .45 ACP mean? Does the man look poor or oppressed? Is he really a terrorist? Am I guilty of profiling? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Does the pistol have an appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he’d be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? Can we make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior. I need to debate this with some friends for a few days and try to come to a consensus. This is all so confusing! ****************************** Republican’s Answer: BANG! ****************************** Southerner’s Answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Click….. (Sounds of reloading) BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Click. Daughter: “Nice grouping, Daddy! Were those the Speer Gold Dots or Federal Premium hollow points?!” Son: “Can I shoot the next one?!” Wife: “You are NOT taking that to a Taxidermist!” 🤣🤣🤣

Sounds like my darlin' wife unit and my rock collection. She says that if&when I die, she will be calling 1 800 GOT JUNK to come haul it all away. I tell her not to be so flippant about it and that she could sell it all and buy 2 of the houses we live in and have enough left over to furnish them. Think she says such to get my goat. I explain that I won't be in any position to care what she does. That usually shuts her up. I hope she enjoys selling rocks! A grand posthumous haunting scheme by means of minerals. *grin* Your buddy was a dumbass just throwing money away like that. Wonder if there were underlying issues. Yes there were underlying issues. Mr Vick pretty much divorced her for the hoarding issues. The house was so packed with pottery it looked like a messy museum with a path. And I bet Steve got chewed out for breaking some of the pottery when he and little brother were wrestling in the house. Steve could have placed one call to a pottery auction house and they would have quoted him a fat price and hauled it off. Nope, he wanted to destroy it, no doubt. 😭

Hi Y'all, Been lurking a bit, looks like a great resource and a great community! My parents were 'hounds when I was a teenager (many, many moons ago) and I guess it's always stayed in the blood. Moved to northern NV a couple years ago and have discovered that this region is incredibly rich in opportunities. In just a couple of months have collected several hundred pounds of agate, jasper, petrified/agatized/opalized wood, wonderstone and obsidian, of all sizes, all within a couple-three hours' drive, much within a half hour. Was "loaned" (probably permanently) an old 10" Franton trim saw I'm refurbishing, and got a screamin' deal on an older Highland Plains 8" combo unit that had been nicely refurbished. 8" saw, two wheels (room for a third) and a polishing disk. Bought a Lortone 33B, and have discovered that I already have enough tumbling material to occupy it for about a decade, so I'm looking at another Lortone (probably a QT66). I'll use the rotaries for rough, and get a vibe for the other stages. I tend to be a bit addictive in my pursuits and this is a lot better than online gaming. Baha. 'Hounds seem to be mighty friendly folk, and this forum seems to be best of the best. Looking forward to it. Argh I'm jealous of where you live. I had a friend who lived out there and would send me jasper and petrified wood. Sadly, we're not friends anymore. You are right about this being a great forum! I feel smarter already and it hasn't even been a week that I've been here! ☺

OK, did a little preliminary research... don't drink the slurry. The uranium content of Vaseline glass ranges from 1/10 of 1 % up to 7% uranium... but not all glass than contains uranium is the classic "Vaseline" color. Some is amber. Also, the amount it glows under black light do not necessarily relate to the amount of radioactive material it contains. Old glass can also contain lead, thorium, and arsenic. With the little knowledge I have, personally I would still tumble it, but while in process only open the tumbler outside, (tumbled glass cam give off gasses) and handle the slurry with gloves on. Should be OK to show off after it is done. More research is probably in order. Thanks for your research lookatthat! Fortunately there was no Vaseline glass in the box I dropped - I would be crying! I have a ton of research to do before I begin. ~~I have a double 3 lb tumbler and a bunch of broken glass. That is all, except I also have NO knowledge~~ 😉

bevsmith1960! I was originally a Michigander, but now I live in Tennessee. Look forward to seeing some pictures of your sun catchers and windchimes. My parents are from TN and they moved here before I was born. Still have a bunch of cousins there ☺

Thanks Pat! I am in mid-Michigan. The more I read, the more I realize I don't know! And I already knew I didn't know anything so now I'm just over-whelmed and freaking out. Ahhhh....!!! 😄😅 Hey, another Michigander! We’ve got some decent rocks in this state to tumble if you ever decide to move beyond glass. I am aware! I have boxes and boxes of rocks I have collected through the years. I have some in the window sills, on the kitchen counter, a bowl in the bathroom and living room. They're in my car and purse! I put them on my deck and stack them up in my flower beds! 💕

from Virginia. Sorry about your glassware. But, your repurposing is a good idea. Should be pretty cool. BTW- Your cheery smile brightened my cold day..... BRRRRR Thanks x two! I was just devastated when I dropped that box. Tripped carrying it into the garage...very similar to my Mom a few years ago. She was carrying a set of dishes in a box. She saved all but one plate - but broke her hip! All that ran through my head in the split second I had to make a decision! Bev 1, dishes 0 😉

Hi Bev, welcome from Michigan. I don’t care what people say about jamesp, I think he’s ok. If you have any specific questions about tumbling your glass, let us know. Glass is a little tricker to tumble, but if you’re just making it into something like beach glass, you shouldn’t have any problems. Just be careful to check the barrel for bulging. Glass can give off gas that causes barrels to explode. I just had this experience for th first time a couple months ago. My barrel didn’t explode, but the bottom was pushed way out. Woah! Thanks for the tip!!
