I am almost a year late in posting this. Last year my hubs and I went to Ron Coleman quartz mine in Arkansas. We picked up not only the crystals we found, but we also picked up any chunks of quartz for the tumbler. This piece at first just looked like a hunk of quartz with a large dark area, but as it tumbled down, it revealed a beautiful banded pattern. What do you think this is? And how should I polish it? It has lots of fractures. I have a flat lap, and I thought I might use it instead of throwing it back in the tumbler. I could add some clear epoxy to give it some stability, too. First, the "boring" side Now, the interesting side

Here's a little bit better photo showing the fractures

Quartz Crystal growth lines. That is how phantom quartz is made, different minerals during times of growth. Note hex shape that follows the c-axis of the quartz crystal.

Interesting quartz
Throw this idea out there
2 distinct stages of growth probably eons apart
would think the purer quartz in the form of hot silica gel
later intruded the banded host cherty rock stuff
not sure that makes any sense and look forward to being corrected…
mostly

Thanks for the link. That is so interesting - I've seen photos of phantom quartz, but I didn't realize it could be more opaque like this. I think I like it better that way! Too bad it's so fractured.
