Does anyone know where a good spot near San Antonio to start looking for rocks I’m trying to get into the hobby cause I like Rocks, but don’t know any spots.

cloud101 Welcome to RTH! I can't help as I'm an East Coastie, but someone will chime in.

Welcome cloud101. There are locations for different types of petrified wood and/or river gravel in the area around San Antonio. There are several members that post material from that general vicinity that might help with a location that is open to hunting. Many areas need the owners permission. Good Luck!

Does anyone know where a good spot near San Antonio to start looking for rocks I’m trying to get into the hobby cause I like Rocks, but don’t know any spots. Hi. I haven't gone rockhounding in San Antonio, but have done extensive rockhounding in the Austin area. My recommendation is to start in local creek beds. We find lots of fossils, quartz and chert in the creek beds up here. Every once and a while we get lucky and find an arrow head. A few tips - 1) go after the waters recede from a good rain. 2) we tend to find a lot more fossils in creek/river bends that are within or right after large cliffs. Best of luck! Respectfully, Dillon

Just draw a triangle between Three Rivers, George West and Simmons City. Oil fields there full of petrified wood of all sorts, agates , jasper etc Easy roadside collecting in bar ditches. Look for county gravel roads with the most exposed gravel, especially after a hard rain. Short drive only 60-90 minutes.
