Well, I've got my reservations in place for the first two weekends of November for field trips to the Kokernot and Boxcar ranches in Alpine, TX. I'm still working out what to do with the five days in between...from November 7 thru 11. Jean Larremore has a hunt on Wednesday on the So. Larremore, but that still leaves four down days. Gotta fill in or head out. Can't sit. My first thought is to head south and roadside collect around George West, Laredo and Zapata. My only hesitation there is that deer hunting season opens that week. There aren't any state authorized deer hunting areas near my hunting areas that I can see in the state map, but that doesn't mean there can't be hunters. I do have day glo gear. If anybody has any suggestions please feel free to suggest.

Sounds like a cool trip! I'd be careful going anywhere along the border where the drug runners and human smugglers have free access to cross. Too dangerous.

Yes, got to be careful. The Mines Road south of Laredo sits right along the border but it's pretty safe because the border patrol is everywhere and lots of oil trucks and equipment moving up and down it constantly. Still have to be vigilant. A number of Texas folks reached out to me on Facebook and I think I've got a plan to stay around Alpine for the whole week. And Teri Smith might be able to work something out for field trips and that would be cool. I do want to hit the roads around Laredo, George West and Zapata but that can wait for the spring when there are no hunters , or at least only a few scattered on private property.

Hi Craig
If hunting deer near Alpine you might want to go with Teri since Alpine is all private land. It is a tall drive to Zapata and there are miles of gravel roads to collect on be it deer season or not. Most of the hunters hunt behind fence and high fence. The gravel roads on the large point(Beckwith Arm ?) at about mid-point of the lake will keep you occupied for a long time. I can help you with details on hunting gravel roads around Zapata

You might check and see if Hattie Stillwell's rch is still open down towards Big Bend. it has material very similar to Rio Grande gravel and lots of good colorful pet wood.

I'm not sure if I'll head to Zapata on this trip or not, but if I don't, I'll definitely head there on the spring trip. I'm making up for lost time after some surgeries that slowed me down. If I don't stay around Alpine and decide to head south, I'll check back in with you when it's closer to time to go. I really appreciate the help. I'm not gettting any younger or richer, so I'll make the most of it.

Sorry for the slow response, Sabre52. Thanks for the idea. I'll check. I know it was sold and heard it was closed for good, but worth a phone call for sure. I've hounded that a few times.

I may be mistaken, however I believe Teri mentioned that Stilwell Ranch was closed to collecting. She should be able to verify that.

I went to Teri's website and it's posted there. Lots of old posts from the ranch on the web make it look open because they never removed them. I'm not even sure if they still do the camping and concert thing.
