Hi Everyone that laps.
My question is this. When just lapping a slab do you put pressure on the slab on the diamond wheel or do you let it just ride. I don't want to ruin my diamond wheel at the starting line. Also how much of a drip do I need from the water supply?
Thank you everyone in advance.

From the videos I have saw on Michagan rocks channel, it looks like he applies light pressure. Not really pressing hard but not just letting it ride either. Maybe this Video will help.

Kelly, I believe HankRocks uses weights on top of his material when he's got them running on the flat lap. When sucks about the slant cabber is you can't really leave the material unattended. It's why I don't face polish a lot of things...I don't feel like standing there forever...or what seems like forever! LOL - With an actual flat lap (like Henry has), they can be left unattended.

Can a diamond wheel get ruined? I move from inside to outside constantly like the lady told me where we bought it. I got an 80 diamond wheel coming maybe I should forgo amethyst and agate until it arrives 🤔

Yes, you will have to put a little pressure on it, but you'll need to make sure that the pressure is even or you'll grind the stone at an angle on the side you put more pressure on. What I do for really large cabs when I'm doing a back is dop the front of the stone with a really fat dop stick so I can slide it between my pointer and middle finger and move it around without having to worry about it flinging off the lap (I don't have a slant cabber). But you would need a way to hold it on the lap with the slant cabber, too. It also makes it easier to pick it up off the lap to check on progress and saves your nails and skin. I've never lapped a slab on my flat lap, but a really large cab I have done.

They say the same thing when working the wheels on a cabbing machine - don't just use the middle. Trust me...I do understand about things like this being therapeutic!

Can I ruin a diamond wheel? I've only done a fluorite, Adventurine, cheveron amethyst and an agate nodule that was cut in half

Greetings nursetumbler, just light pressure on the wheel or lap just enough that the stone does not fly out your hand and get flung accoss the room, let the wheel or lap do the work, I move in a figure 8 accross the lap and always rounding down flat edges as they occur.
Yes Diamond laps can be damaged usually uneven wear where someone hold a stone in the same place for too long regardless on hardness of stone,
Coarse: 5 - 7 drips per second placed at center of lap.
Fine and polish: 3 - 4 drips per second placed at center of lap.
If the stones in sparking or smoking increase the water flow.
