Hello! I'm obsessed with rocks and had nowhere to talk about it, then stumbled across this place. I barely know what I'm doing with any of this, but eager to learn. Actually ended up here because I got a...don't hurt me...Chicago Electric tumbler, just set it up today, and after only three hours came downstairs to find an absolutely horrible smell, and I found the forum while searching online for what to do about this. Those few hours were my first real steps into this hobby, but it looks like this set back will mean I can't get into it as much as I want to until the economy is better. But at least I can see your pictures in the meantime.

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! I barely knew what I was doing when I joined this forum...but everyone on here is more than happy to help people along the way! There's a LOT of members who have a CE tumbler...so don't feel badly about that! Was the smell due to a motor burning out...a belt slipping...the barrel rubbing?? There's a couple culprits for bad smells. (In my house, it's my dog farting...so there's always that I suppose! LOL) ETA: Or do what Robin ( hummingbirdstones) said...return and exchange it!

A Chicago tumbler has a unique smell to it, when its first taken out of the box. At least they used to years back!I know well after going through I believe 6-8 of them. Many a trip to Harbor freight returning the tumbler and getting another one. Finally tired of the hassle.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! A Chicago tumbler has a unique smell to it, when its first taken out of the box. At least they used to years back!I know well after going through I believe 6-8 of them. Many a trip to Harbor freight returning the tumbler and getting another one. Finally tired of the hassle. snuffy It smelled fine out of the box. Smells like the motor may have gone bad. I took it outside to let it cool off and when I looked at the floor, it looked like a few pieces of burnt plastic had fallen out. I'll open it up later to inspect it more. Kind of feel like I should return it and just wait until I can get my hands on a better one that's more reliable and safer. It's been hours and the room still reeks and so does the machine if you get close enough.

Greetings and Welcome from Bonnybridge, Scotland too!
Some people use Lortone 3A/33B motors and belts in their Chicago Electric / Harbour freight Rotary tumblers for longer use.
Finally do not open the motor just get a replacement under Warranty.
