I've been playing around with a bunch of more specimen-like pieces lately, some more like mini sculptures...no idea why, I start exploring the rock when something catches my eye and the next thing I know half a day has gone by and I have this small sculpture in my hands. I remember being very intentional with everything I was doing, and studying the rock a bunch in the process, then suddenly I just know that it is done, with complete certainty...a strange experience. Anyone else ever get lost in working a rock like that? I've also been falling prey to shiny object syndrome. While exploring rocks with multiple fire layers, some of them have been compelling me to contour polish the first layer I come to, which just elevates the feeling of risk if I ever try to separate them out. Whatever madness is taking hold of me, here are a few completed pieces from the endeavors for those that also like shiny things

Beautiful! The same thing happens to me, especially when I'm cutting or carving opal. I can spend an hour just looking at it from every direction before I even touch it with a wheel. I guess my brain kind of goes alpha and I don't realize that lots of time is going by as I'm working. It happens sometimes when I'm doing other more mundane things, too, such as weeding. I think maybe we all have SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome) here.

Those are soooo amazing, jasperfanatic ! I don't know which I like best. I haven't felt like you describe working a rock (I'm still learning), but I paint and draw and it's what every artist tries to get into - "Flow State". It's where you are not really thinking about anything, you are just peacefully doing it. You described it well - you have complete certainty in everything you are doing, but you are not overthinking how to do it. Hours can go by when you're in this state and you'll not even know it. It's great when that happens!

I'm the same way, I want to love carving, but I just can't sit for long doing that. The cabbing wheels however, as what happened with these, the time just melts away sometimes

Wonderful pieces! I know similar feelings and stress from cutting opal. "Should I stick with this layer??" "Is that red real or just a whisper?" "Is the fire diving lower or just disappearing?" "Oh, &%@$#$!!" And so on.
