It's my first time using my vibe. I started some red jasper a couple hours ago. I'm pretty excited. Both to see how they turn out, and to see what I do wrong and need to learn.

Vibes are fun because the action is fast. You can have successes or failures, fast! The most important thing is movement which you can control with the mass and size of the rocks you are processing and the amount of water that you add. As for the water don't add too much or you end up with rock soup and all of the spices in the bottom. You are on the right track. Good luck.

I think your slurry is looking just right. I don't know what vibe that is so I can't say how full it should be. I like my UV-10 to be 3/4 full. Oh yeah, mistakes are expected and I've made many. I think it is the only way to getting it just right. Looking forward to seeing them when they are done.

079a7That’s exciting! Looking forward to seeing your results! I keep a notebook and write all my tumbles in them and keep notes so as I learn I can keep track of what I’m doing. (My memory is not good enough to do that without the notebook lol!)

079a7, I agree with Perauno that the fill level, media mix, and water are most important. I run a UV-18 and for my machine your bowl sides and stones show excess water. Excess water in your tumble slows or prevents a heavier coat of abrasive or polish on the stone and makes the process take longer. I sometimes add too much water and have found that paper kitchen towels are great sponges for excess water removal and all you need to do is recharge. Hope this helps.

It looked good for a bit, but I ended up with rock soup.
I decided to rotary tumble the rocks some more. I was over-excited to get something in this new-to-me machine.
I have got a lot to learn; Thus I really appreciate having so many experienced persons, and their open advice, here.
Thank you all!

Thank you for asking.
With this vibe, I'm to the point where I think that I have to constantly monitor it. It just dries out to nothing so quickly. What I need to do is to go down to my local mineral & gem society, and see if any old-timer (or someone who has seen this sort of machine) can give me some hints.

From the looks of the picture, there seems to be a lot of "slurry" around the top of the barrel. Do you tumble this with or without the lid on? If it's without the lid, that would explain the loss of moisture through evaporation. If you're tumbling it with the lid on, maybe it's not sealing up well and is still evaporating. One thing you can do is put a piece of wax paper on the underside of the lid when you put it on...it might help with sealing it up better...and it keeps the lid clean from slurry splashing. If it's not through evaporation, then the slurry is soaking it up. I've ran my vibe with a tad bit more water than is recommended to start.

You might also try a bit less grit and play around with how much your putting in until you get a nice slurry without it drying out. The lot o calls for 2 TBSP of 120/220 but that was always so dry and a pain for me. I now only do 1 TSP and it works great. So maybe a bit of experimenting might help.

Thank you both, jasoninsd and ashley. I was pretty bummed out upon my failures; Although, in a life sense, I have failed many times and shouldn't let myself get bummed out about things like this. I should have just asked for helping opinions, such as on here. Thank you for your proactive advice! The wax paper is making a huge improvement in my run time. I will have to pay attention to and experiment with the amount of grit which I put in. I appreciate what you have offered me!
