What is the hardness, and does it fiz with a little hydrochloric?

nik, a stainless steel knife will scratch it with pressure. I don't have HCl but vinegar causes a slight bubbling in some of the cracks.

I'm thinking a pseudo fossil most likely a form of orbicular rhyolite. Not fern. Fern vascular bundles are kind of "C" shaped, not round.

I'm just guessing, but it really looks biological to me. Possibly something along the lines of a stromatolite or some other algal or bacterial mat type formation.
