Did you go to the Seaman Museum in Houghton, MI while you were Up Nort ? It's has a really awesome collection of gems and minerals !!!! There is a MichiganGuy YouTube Video about it that is well worth watching. Off to the beach now .. wish me luck. The weather has turned icky but ... oh well ! Yep I went there and really enjoyed it! Their prices for gifts are better than the other rock-themed shops up there, too. Another must-visit museum, near Chicago, is the Lizzadro museum of Lapidary arts. They specialize their collection in dynastic jade carvings, it's extremely impressive. Have fun at the beach! It's one of the only places I've found use for my wetsuit, since the water is pretty cold. Did you try a streak test on therm yet? That often tells you immediately what they are. Any bubbles in them?
Thanks for those tips, I'll try the streak test when I find my mohs kit with the streak plate. Nah, no vesicles. One looks like magnetite or hematite to me, and the other appears to be a sandstone or quartzite with magnetite grains mixed in with the silica. You don't need a streak plate. Flip the toilet tank lid over and rub the specimen against the unglazed porcelain.

The one on the left would be hematite.
