Hello everyone, lovely to join you all here! I'm Maple, a mom from the Chicagoland area, my pronouns are they/them, and I'm excited about rocks (ha). I was very into rocks when I was a kid and was even given a rock tumbler (a rolling stones plastic one that I never used because I didn't know how to get more grit and was afraid to mess it up without parental support). I have been going to the beach with my kids a lot in the last few years and they've started bringing me really cool rocks that I didn't think we had around here, so I started looking and...I probably have about 200 lbs of rocks I've collected from July through October.
Needless to say, I've REALLY gotten back into collecting and I feel silly that I've taken my proximity to the great lakes for granted for so long. I've been watching YouTube videos to learn more about collecting and what to do with the cool stuff I have kept and I've decided to get into tumbling as well, I wish I still had my tile saw from a decade ago, but I moved a few times since then and got rid of it after not using it. I have to give a shout-out to Rob Jugglerguy, for the super informative and fun/ny videos that have really helped me spot and identify great rocks to tumble, and have really gotten me started in tumbling with confidence! He's also the reason I found this forum and I'm looking forward to learning some more great things from all of you too!
I started slow with a harbor freight tumbler a few months ago (I figured it's good enough for the kids) and quickly realized that 2 3lb barrels was just not fast enough for me. I recently bought a Rebel 17 tumbler (so many others aren't in stock right now!) and so far it's been great, but...also I NEED TO GET MORE ROCKS ROLLING (HA)! I'm apparently very impatient because I haven't even gotten my first completed batch out, 1 more week until those are out, but I'm hooked! Finding the treasures of this world and making them even more beautiful is such a gift. Anyway, I hope to post more soon, I'll get some photos up as soon as I can figure out the cloudinary uploading (I did change my settings, the tutorial was helpful).
Oh, I'm also an educator, big into riding my motorcycle, hiking, camping, canoeing, hammocking, making jewelry, and doing community work to support LGBTQ+ folx in my county. This seems like a great, interactive community and I'm looking forward to contributing as well!
-Maple

The first pic is most of the rocks I've collected, mostly sorted, though I'm missing my current batches and my box of rocks that need some pre-tumbling cuts/breaks. The second is my simple setup in the garage, I'll have to keep an eye on it as the temperature drops, but they're not so loud that I can't deal with them being in the basement or even the guest room.

My Yamaha TW200 was a great rock hounder's machine. Many days, I came back from the desert with about 30 lbs of rocks in the saddlebags. Once when I dropped the bike in a long mud puddle, I had to unload the bags before I could pick up the bike. You might not see that kind of mud around the lakes, and certainly not for several months. Ride on.
