Here's some more material that came via aDave . I did some research on the Spider Web Jasper. There are several materials that use Spider Web Jasper (Spiderweb Jasper) as a trade name. This particular material was originally known as Pegratite...but became known as SWJ somewhere along the way. EDIT - I believe the 3rd picture down is actually Lavic Jasper...not Spiderman/Spiderwoman Jasper like I originally posted. That takes us to the Reyes Agate! The deposit (a very narrow seam) is located near the famous Cathedral agate mines in Chihuahua, Mexico. The pictures are of slabs from three different small chunks. I seriously can't wait to make some cabs from this material!

We bought some of that Spiderweb Jasper years ago. The stuff we got was so crumbly it's still sitting in a box in the saw shop somewhere. Your slab look like it actually may be cuttable. The Reyes Agate is beautiful! Can't wait to see the cabs from it.

Trade names are the bane of the hobby IMO. I thought it was funny that Spiderman Jasper (which emerged about the same time as the eponymous movie series) had to be renamed "Spiderwoman" to keep pace with Woke culture. This material from Idaho bore the original "Spiderman" name. Don't know what the type you refer to looks like.

gemfeller I also have a chunk of rough that looks like yours. Bought it years ago, maybe a decade, from an Idaho seller. Pretty sure it was called Spider-Man Jasper when I bought it. Haven’t cut any yet. It’s pretty cool looking stuff though.

The spiderman and woman have to do with original and subsequent finds, according to the claim holder. There are differences in the red veins but, whatever... Philip also says it's basinite, not jasper.

The Reyes Agate is beautiful! Can't wait to see the cabs from it. Thanks Robin! That Spiderweb Jasper is SO prone to fractures! I've got some pieces marked out that I don't think have fracture issues...but we'll see! I'm super stoked about working that Reyes! Trade names are the bane of the hobby IMO. This material from Idaho bore the original "Spiderman" name. Don't know what the type you refer to looks like. Thanks Rick!! I totally messed up the ID on the material in that 3rd picture. I was thinking it was Spiderman/Spiderwoman Jasper...but I think it might actually be Lavic. The colorization is ALL wrong for Spiderman/Spiderwoman Jasper...where it's black with red "webbing" - like yours is! aDave - Is the material in the 3rd picture what you were saying was the Lavic? I thought it was some of the other red material...but now I'm thinking it's this one. gemfeller I also have a chunk of rough that looks like yours. If it's not too much trouble...I'd love to see a picture of your piece if you can. jasoninsd Looking forward to seeing your finished cabs! Thanks! It's nice to hear what the difference between Spiderman and Spiderwoman is! And of course, it's ANOTHER material labeled jasper...when it really isn't! LOL

Philip also says it's basinite, not jasper. As you say, "whatever." It polishes like basanite i.e., it doesn't polish at all like a quartz material. The word "jasper" has come to mean "We can't identify it for sure, or you probably wouldn't buy it if we named it accurately, so we'll call it jasper." It was originally marketed as jasper as I recall.

jasoninsd - Yes, that 3rd photo looks to be some brecciated Lavic material. I missed it earlier when I looked at the thread, as I forgot I sent you some. That's a fine piece indeed. Let's just hope it's fully sillicated and will take a polish in all spots. That's the bane of this material for cabbing.

I swear I wasn't drunk when I posted the threads today! LOL I've got a couple preforms of each of these marked out...now just waiting no something above 20 degrees to hit again to get on the trim saw! LOL

That piece of Lavic you cut is pretty classic for its reds and yellows. Funny how I've seen folks get nicer stuff than I kept, LOL. But, I really like the stuff. My favorite specimen that I've kept is a piece of brecciated Lavic seen below. Not meaning to hijack your thread, but it's amazing the variations that can come out of this place. While this photo shows it wet, it doesn't need to be. The colors are just as vivid dry. It was literally the last piece I collected on one trip, and I've never seen anything else like it.

Now realrockhoundI like the non binary spider material, great intarsia stuff. I bought a flat rate box from Philip. In fact, I should figure out where it is and make something up with some other stuff I have in a saw right now. Maybe next year...

jasoninsd Pretty sure mine is he/him Spider-man identifying as “jasper” because I procured it way before the she/her version came onto the scene. Unfortunately much of my rock collection got moved and stored out of easy access while we deal with some changes around here. I will keep an eye out for it and post a pic when I find it. It may be a surprise further down the road.

After discussing things with aDave on the phone earlier today, the piece that I posted was completely misidentified. The 3rd picture is definitely Lavic...and not Spidey Jasper (I'm just going to start calling it that from now on! LOL)
