I bought a whole bunch of rocks at an auction recently, and there are some that are a mystery. I'm not sure what these geode/T-egg type rocks are and whether I should spend the time and energy to cut them, so you'll save my blades and hands the trouble if you can help me ID them! #1 - I have several of these. They feel solid, no rattles. Sparkly and hard like quartzite. Have bellybuttons. #2 - I only have one of these. This one is cool as-is, with all its weird curved indentions. They just seem to be indentations, not a separate material. Very round. It is hard - I can't scratch it with stainless steel nail. On this side, it looks like it might be translucent #3 - I have several of these. Botryoidal T-Eggs? I expected to be able to scratch them with my trusty nail, but I couldn't This one kind of has a "yokey" looking area in the first photo. A different one: #4 - I only have one of these - I can actually scratch this one easily with my steel nail, at least, the outer layer. (Kind of seems to have a crust, doesn't it?) And I THINK it is slightly magnetic. Could there be anything good in there?

Agree with Son Of Beach. Looks like for #1 and #2 the most interesting features are their surfaces. I am very curious to see the cuts for #3 and #4!

LOL - yes, the second one is weird for sure! At the auction, all the rock people became friends and we all commented on just about everything everyone bought, but when I won that rock everyone just stared at that rock in silence as it was passed to me. (It was in a box of rocks, but it was pretty much all you could see at the top.) I don't think anyone knew what it was. Or maybe it was controlling their minds and has chosen me as its new host.

If they were mine...and no one was able to ID them (which I can't help with!)...I'd be cutting every one of these except the Dragon Egg one. That first and third are extremely interesting. The third one looks like what a Cold Mountain Thunderegg looks like...I'm not saying that's what it is.
(So...basically I'm no help other than to try and encourage you to slice them open! LOL)

And I do love to cut those rocks open......I definitely won't touch the dragon egg without knowing what it is, unless I need to cut it to let the baby dragon out.

That last one is what I call a sugar egg. I pick them up all over Paulina. When cut open, it’s a quartz filled geode of sorts. Second to last is a thunderegg. First two are just odd formations. They won’t yield anything more spectacular once cut open.

Yep, I would definitely cut 3a and 3b, and possibly 4. for 3a you want to try to orient it to cut the longest cross section possible, each bubble is an individual thundereggin the fused together mass. For 4 I usually try to follow one of the outside lines to get the largest view of the agate or opal center, but cutting against the lines can yield stars and other cool shapes as well.

Hopefully that double thunderegg has some good stuff inside! I think I got some other double thundereggs in this lot of rocks, too.

Photo #1 looks like a fossil crinoid geode from Indiana or Kentucky. May or may not be some quartz crystals inside.

Funny you should say that because before I created this thread, I found ONE PHOTO online of a Kentucky geode that had the same weird circular, ribbed designs on the outside. I bet you are right about that. I think it looks pretty cool as-is, but I may cut some of the other, less interesting looking, geodes. =)

The first two are Geodes of the type from Keokuk IA, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. what I have learned is never ever saw these it is a waste of diamond. They are white quartz too boring for words. sometimes they will have minerals or agate depending on where from. If you want to open them go to home depot and rent a soil pipe cutter. This provides a chain with cutting disks that wrap around the stone then tighten and it cuts in a fairly straight line. Item #2 looks like quartz probably would not cut. Item #3 could have agate center Item #4 have no idea

I was thinking the first two were Indiana Geodes. I was sent some in a rock care package. Have not cut mine yet.

#2 is a quartzite nodule. I find many with this particular weathering pattern in Wyoming. I'd cut #3, 4.

My thought is if you have the ability to cut them, you should always cut them, if for no other reason than to see what is inside!
