This weather system is very powerful and effecting a wide area.
I feel for my tenants calves. Some are pretty little. He has a lot of trailers in the pasture for shelter, so I hope the calves use them.

That sounds awful!!! I'm so sorry you have to deal with this and take care of your outside animals. Tough job. Just got an email from boss lady. She is really hoping I can make it in to work today. I have to let her know by 9, if the roads will be good enough for me to make it to work by 12:30. That could be a challenge. I've had WAY too many close calls over the years driving to get to work...or driving for employers! I just don't think any job is worth risking my life. I'm not an emergency responder...so I figure the risk is not greater than the reward in those cases.

What about your horse & dog ?
They need you home.

I just went out to the garage. I paused for a few seconds to listen to the sounds of the trees straining in the cold and the wind. Problem is, I absentmindedly held onto the door knob while I paused. My fingers were burning (freezing) within seconds. Good thing I didn't lick it! LOL

Boss Lady's husband would drive me home in his 4WD truck if need be. That is how desperate she is. He would also pick me up the next day for work. Biggest problems I see are: Leaving my car in the parking lot overnight. It would be plowed in. Could be vandalized. What if the all out blizzard and predicted travel restrictions actually happen? Then I would be at home with no car.
I am going to see how things look a little before 9 and make my decision then.

Haven seen much posting- hope you didn't freeze to death & are keeping your rocks warm.
It's a balmy 35 degrees here in NW Florida, expecting 18 tonight + wind chill factor.

Thanks for asking Patty. I've been trying to deal with a frozen sewer line on the north end of the house this morning. The tub won't drain. The sink and the toilet are draining fine...but somewhere the line for the tub is clogged. All three drain to the same main line... I haven't paid attention to the actual wind chill temps. I believe without a doubt it has been way down in the 30-50 below range...with the winds coming from the north. That's why the frozen line isn't a shocker. The faucets have all been dripping for days (purposely) with the cabinet doors open to allow heat to get to the pipes. But for some reason, the temps got to that dang tub drain. I know I saw -19 air temp the other day when the wind was howling. Yesterday I had to take the garbage up to the street. Just those 5 minutes outside in the wind was close to unbearable on exposed skin.

jasoninsd, I hate plumbing problems - especially in cold frigid weather. But I mean why exactly do you need the tub- you have a sink & toilet.
You could bath in the sink.
I mean you're not sweating or anything
Seriously - can pouring boiling water down the drain help ?
Glad to hear you're OK, just being annoyed.

I hate them too!! It's in our "back bathroom"...so we have another shower...thankfully! LOL I would not want to pour boiling water down the drain and risk shocking the pipes. If the temp of the pipes are enough to freeze the water, then the drastic temperature change could crack them. I'm hoping the heater is going to work. It'll take some time. Right or wrong, I did get some "ice-melt" into the drain. As it dissolves, hopefully it'll work it's way down to the blockage....

I know we used to use heat tape that you plug in & wrap around the pipes, before it gets frozen.
Don't know if they actually still sell the stuff - might be dangerous or something
Tom said he's used an electric heat gun - if you know exactly where it's frozen
Good Luck with it.

Yeah...I do know about the heat gun. I'm leaving that as the last resort. I would have to crawl under the house...the entire length of the house as the access point is on the south end. I HATE getting under this house!! I could be wrong, but I don't think heat tape is used on the sewer lines...just the water lines.

Thanks for thinking of us and others. I did AM chores in -30 wind chill this AM. The winds have picked up since then. I keep hearing small pieces of evergreen trees hit my patio doors. It is a balmy -9 now. I am considering not going in to work today. My car is having problems. I have to start it with an old fashioned battery starter. That thing weighs a ton. If I go to work, will have it haul it and some extension cords along. No one can figure out what is wrong with my car. It turns over when cold, but does not seem to be getting gas. The heavy duty battery is newer and tested to -30 CCA last month. My animals are taking all this in stride. Sierra dog really wanted to play this AM, but it was just too cold. Take care everyone.

jasoninsd I had my car in last month for an oil change and pre-winter check. They ran diagnostics and checked a bunch of stuff. This is the 3rd shop I have taken it to. No one has been able to solve the mystery. This all started a couple years ago. It starts fine above 15-20 degrees. My battery is about 1.5 years old. Runs fine once started. I am very frustrated.

At least jasoninsd, IF you crawl under the house, it's too cold for the tarantulas to come out and bother you ! Tom says, you might reconsider the heat tape in the future.
Water is water no matter what kind of line it's in.
