I would like to introduce my self , Im Scott and I live in Northern California in the placer county area. I’m getting into this hobby from my son Ben ( 9yo) who is on the autistic spectrum , he’s got a big passion for rock and fossils and I’m trying to get my self started for long term success. I currently have two Lortone 33b tumblers ( 4 / 3lbs drums ) that where gifts from a co worker who was part time gold prospector and rock hound . I would like to build my own set up for larger scale tumbling since my son is constantly picking up rock that he wants to tumble and he doesnt always have the patience to wait the weeks and months it takes in a rotary tumblers . I’m looking into getting a vibratory tumbler after the Christmas holidays . I work as a power plant engineer for a large city municipality with a of stand by time , so I would like to get/buy plans to make a tumbling set to do maybe 12 /3lb barrels or something similar . My wife and daughter has express interest in making their own jewelry so some time in the future I would like to track down cabbing and slabbing equipment to possibly get them started .Any fellow people in area I would like to connect with and I’m open to advice or places to help us find rocks
thanks scott

Hey Scott! Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! There's a large DIY section on here where people have posted their builds for tumblers and cabbing machines. There's lots of knowledgeable people on the forum who are more than willing to answer questions for when you do build your own.

yosemite . Hi Scott. Great introduction. Welcome to RTH. There are folks here who have built enclosed cabinets with multiple barrels running on one motor. They are very cool. I’m not that talented. I’m running two 12 pound Lortones on coarse grit only. I have one 33b running all of the other stages. I think larger barrels are slightly more efficient at coarse grinding/shaping. I feel like one more 12 lb tumbler would speed things up for me, but they aren’t cheap. I polished 10 three pound barrels in 2022 using this setup. I have one more 3 lb barrel on prepolish now. It probably won’t make the 2022 list. I was shooting for one finished 3lb barrel per month. My expectations were low so I’m happy with 10 3/4 barrels. This is a great hobby for someone on the spectrum. It forces you to be patient on one hand. On the other hand you can be as meticulous and perfect as your patience can stand. Glad to have you guys here. You should definitely pipe up if you have questions.
