Hi- I just got into rock tumbling after visiting a 'gem mine' on vacation. Loved learning about the different varieties and invested in a rotary tumbler. Finished my first batch last week- looked great after the polish but I think I screwed up by trying burnishing.....so I came here for advice!

Hi newbiefromdibley welcome from Idaho, (USA). It would be good if you could post some photos of your tumble. The Cloudinary tutorial is pretty helpful for posting pictures. I’m looking forward to seeing some of you rocks.

Thank you everyone- I only just realized I had replies to my post.
I was in a rush to complete my first run in time for Christmas. I tumbled quartz, jasper and tiger eye together. Everything looked great after the fourth round of grit, so I wanted to try burnishing. I didn't have borax or bar soap, but I read online that dish detergent was ok too, so I added some very simple, non-scented, non-colored stuff I had.
After an hour I went to check, and all my lovely shiny rocks had gone dull and white'ish and scratched, so I obviously screwed up and created some kind of adverse reaction.
After a good clean I've started them on a new round 1 grit to see if I can get them shiny again (so I can't upload pics).
Lesson learned.....if this doesn't fix it I will post the results in the Tumbling Forum. Thanks again for the welcome

My first though was there wasn't enough "cushioning" of smalls when you did that with the detergent... Heck...feel free to post pics anytime...the good, the bad, or the ugly...we like seeing pics of it all.

Welcome from Central California! That seems odd. Did you ever see your shiny rocks dry?
