Here's what our tree looks like this year. A couple days ago, I hung a wrap I made for my wife's Christmas present this year right dead center on the tree. I wanted to see how long it took her to see it. Two days...not bad! LOL My wife doesn't usually care for my wraps...but she had picked this shape out for a Dumortierite cab a long time ago...and I finally made it and wrapped it. I know it took me a spell to do it...but I wasn't ready for the rejection if she didn't like it. For her to actually wear it, I knew it would have to be less frilly. LOL The Malachite wrap is for my stepdaughter. This was a nightmare. The wrap was spanned over two days because I had to walk away from it due to irritation with it! LOL - Then, after I was satisfied with how it turned out, I made a HUGE mistake and put it in the tumbler to harden the wire. Did I mention a HUGE mistake! The tumbling gouged the cab all to heck because the stone's so soft. I even thought about that before I did it, but thought it might be okay. WRONG! So, I got the stone out of the wrap, got it back on dop, reworked the surface, then wondered if I could get it back in the wrap. Thankfully, I did. There's a few small knicks in the wire going across the bottom of the cab, but it is what it is... The last picture shows how much damage was done which caused me to rework it! Sheesh! LOL

The Dumortierite wrap is exquisite Jason. The twisted wire looks nice & no frills, makes it wearable ( IMHO) . I'm sure she must love it.
BUT thank you for the warning on the Malachite .
Honestly I haven't cut any Malachite yet, but I wouldn't have considered it to be a problem.
Now I know.
But I am impressed that you got back in the wrap .
Nothing like that last minute pressure.

Jason, you did a great job of messing that cab up. Glad you were able to bring it back to life.

Patty Thanks Patty! I've run obsidian wraps through the vibe with no issues on the stone...but this taught me a massive lesson when the stone is THAT soft! I wasn't worried about reworking the stone...I knew it "could" be done...I was just irritated I had to do it. I was seriously worried about getting it back into the wrap. I ended up beveling the bottom of the girdle more than normal as I knew that would make it easier to back into the wrap. It worked out. Jason, you did a great job of messing that cab up. Glad you were able to bring it back to life. Thanks Beth! I know, right?!?! I figure if I'm going to screw something up, I might as well do it to the max! LOL - A little bit of CPR*, and it was breathing again! *CPR - Cabochon Pockmark Removal! LOL

Wow, beautiful dumortierite. Ooh boy that malachite. I’m glad you were able to salvage it but I bet that was frustrating to have to almost start over when you thought you were done. I’ve been thinking about the tumbling and risk to stones. Do you use steel shot? I’ve been wondering if a layer or several of masking tape might be good to help protect the stone face? I also did see a YouTube person who only tumbles the wraps then puts the stones back in after the tumble but I bet some wraps are too encased to do that with. I think I also saw a guy who painted some thick layer of something on to protect but I don’t know what he was using. Things to figure out over time… Nice gifts for your family.👍👍

Merry Christmas, Jason!!
I know they will both be well received. Let us know.
I think I have mentioned a few times that malachite is one of the stones I won't tumble. Sorry, Dude. What a PITA.

When I pulled that Malachite out of the tumbler, I could physically feel my shoulders slump! LOL I do use steel shot...and I'm thinking the tape would have to be pretty strong tape in order to withstand the water submersion for a couple hours. We've seen the same YouTube videos! There was a gal who tumbles her wire-wraps, then puts the stones in. I know that is completely reliant on design. There's some designs where that just can't be done. I also saw that guy who painted his stones with whatever it was. You're right about things to learn!! I'm not sure what the solution is for soft stones...but I do know one thing NOT to do now! LOL Merry Christmas, Jason!!

Thank you SO much my friend!! Merry Christmas to you! My wife claims to love hers...but I'm still not convinced she wasn't just being nice! LOL - I've spent so long hearing her say she likes my wraps...but has never really wanted one! LOL Oh don't apologize by the way. As soon as I looked at that pock-marked piece of Malachite, bells were going off in my head remembering you saying NOT to tumble Malachite. So...in a way I did remember what you said...just a couple hours too late! LOL - I'm pretty sure the lesson sunk in this time! My stepdaughter will be getting hers later today. She loves rocks...and I know Malachite is one of her favorite stones. She's got a box made out of Malachite...and a couple polished pieces she picked up somewhere. She's more into crystals for the most part...but I'm thinking she's going to like this one.

Beautiful wraps Jason. They should both be happy with those. Amazing how you can put something in plain site like that and it doesn't get noticed.
I think latex nail polish gets used a lot to coat the cabs. I've seen it suggested for patina work to keep the cab from getting stained by the LOS. I think it's more for masking than actual nail color. You paint it on, let it dry, and when you're done it peels off the stone.

My wife sits in the same spot on the couch all the time. I put it on the tree so it was plainly visible from that spot...and chuckled to myself for two days at least waiting for her to see it! LOL I haven't worked anything yet that got stained from LOS...but I also haven't wrapped any Batcave Jasper. I'm willing to bet that material would stain in a heartbeat as it just wants to wick water no matter what! We're heading over to the in-laws here in a little bit for Prime Rib...and I'm hoping it tastes half as good as that brisket of yours looked!!!

Dumortierite Wrap is perfect!!!! Really showcases the stone. Makes it all about the stone while elegantly accentuating the stone without putting focus on the wrap itself. Grade A+++

Grade A+++ Thank you my friend! Much to my surprise, my wife hasn't taken the wrap off since she put it on days ago. I told her she probably shouldn't sleep with it on...but my recommendation has yet to deter her! LOL

They are both perfection. Lovely wraps, perfect gifts. I had to go back and look a second time, though, because that malachite photo took me to a completely different place! Good for you, hanging in there on that one!
