Hi everyone - my name is Chris Witmer. I am a total noob and I am looking for some advice on rock tumbling. I just finished my first batch and they look less than awesome. Kind of bummed, but I'm going to roll with it.
Rock tumbling has been in the back of my mind since childhood. When I was growing up, there was a man that lived down the street whose passion was rocks. He had several tumblers going all the time. My family would find rocks on vacation, etc. and Mr. Smith would spin them up for us. It was magic. Fast forward 35 years and now my kids love finding rocks on our travels. We've found so many over the years that I finally asked for a tumbler for Christmas (last year) to see if I could rock it like Mr. Smith. I've got work to do...
I got a Thumler AR-1 kit and I followed the instructions, I believe. Looking at the finished product, I believe I needed more filler as some edges really shine, but other faces weren't touched.
Anyway, I'm sure there are many noob threads, so I need to look around, but the forum asked for an introduction, and here it is. Thanks!

Hey ctwitmer , welcome to RTH. You are in the right spot, lots of experienced and new tumblers like yourself and knowledgeable rock lovers on this board. If you use the FORUM tab at the top, you can see all the different subsections and you can browser others posts. You can also use the search bar to find old threads were you might find answers to some of your questions. I also recommend watching some of Jugglerguy videos, Rob does a great job of walking thru his process. It is a good starting point and you will learn some pointers along the way. Best thing to do is hang around and learn from others, most have had to learn as they go.
