Friend made and gave me a big handful of tamales. Love Mexican food, however, I’ve never had a tamale.
At first, I tried slicing into bite size pieces. Decided that was silly. Then opened one up, examined filling, and ate it, leaving the corn husk.
This isn’t rocket science, but…
At this point, I don’t want to ask him how to eat a tamale. Sooooooo, I am asking you….. how to eat a tamale. Thanks.

jasoninsd. That looks like the filling is wrapped in a tortilla, then a corn husk on the outside. Don’t think my corn husks could be cut with the side of a fork. Tortillas easier to cut. Will try it tomorrow. Thanks.

Yes, looks like corn husk meant to be unfolded and used as a plate. I’ll try that, too, instead of scraping off the goods. Thanks.

jasoninsd . That looks like the filling is wrapped in a tortilla, then a corn husk on the outside. Don’t think my corn husks could be cut with the side of a fork. Tortillas easier to cut. Will try it tomorrow. Thanks. Hi Pat! Tamales are made out of some type of meat (beef, pork or chicken) and spices (the very inside) and surrounded by masa, which is a corn-based dough. They are then folded in corn husks and steamed. Unfold the tamale from the corn husk to eat it. You can add salsa or sour cream or whatever you want on top if you wish. Enjoy your tamales. To reheat your tamales you can steam them for 10-15 minutes. This is the best way to reheat them so they retain their texture and flavor. You can also microwave them if you wish. Wrap each tamale in a damp paper towel (I would do very damp but not dripping) and put it on a microwave safe dish. Heat for 1 or 2 minutes.

The tamales are designed to be (re)heated while in the corn husk. After being heated, remove the husk as Robin noted and go from there. I eat tamales very often, as I've been happy with the chicken tamales from Costco. Being in Southern CA with a large Hispanic population, there is no shortage of absolutely outstanding tamales from various vendors. For social events, we'll steam them as we may need a bunch. For myself for breakfast, the microwave is fine. Two minutes in the husk (two tamales), then I pull the husk and add the hot sauce on the outside. I don't use damp paper towels, as we cover our plates in the microwave with a cover designed to protect against splatter. With that, steaming also occurs when heating. After the first two minutes, one more minute in our microwave after that heats things perfectly here. Enjoy.

Had tamales for breakfast. Followed directions. Added sour cream and green salsa. Two minutes in microwave. Simple salad on the side.
It’s nice to know how to eat something new; pretending goes only so far. Thank you!

I guess I'm just a slob. I just unwrap them from the corn husk and eat them like a hot dog, hand held, one end to the other. Love me some Mexican food!!
