Hi all, Temps here have been above freezing so I though the saw could use a little exercise. This one is 3"x3" with a hardness of 6.5-7. Found in South Central WI. Looks to be make up of a conglomerate of large grained quartz in a very fine grained matrix\quartzite. The weird thing is the red dot which looks like a quartz grain but run through to the other side so my original quartzite so my ID maybe wrong. Water added to enhance flavor. Thanks for looking.

I agree. Wondering how to classify this one since it's comprised of ultra-fine and large quartz grains. Seems like it's probably a quartzite breccia base on the gain difference. Any ideas on the red inclusion that permeates the 3/8" section?

The red is hematite. Breccia have angular grains I would call it a conglomerate since the grains are rounded. The coarser grains show deposition in faster flowing water than the more common grain size.
