I was on a jeweler s group the other day and saw a post where contestants exchanged slabs sight unseen and had to create something from it. Whether they drilled a hole in it, metal smithed it, wire wrapped it, etc. and thought that is an awesome idea! Is this something people would be interested in doing? We can discuss if this is something to be voted on or just for fun. Do we have a prize ? Do we exchange finished product? Thoughts

I’d be willing, only under the circumstances all slabs traded were of equal value and quality. And I swear to god, if I supplied a nice piece of rare material and someone drilled a hole in it, I’d crap my pants in a fit of rage 🤣

Interesting idea...and my first thought is that it sounds great!
My vote would be "just for fun"...and creator keeps their own creation.
One of the things that would concern me about me participating would be the perceived value of the exchanged material. I've seen some of the old threads and seen some of the types of material exchanged...and I know I don't have the same level of material like a lot of the members.

Very valid points. So what would a solution be ?
We all put up a slab and do a random draw? Understanding that we may not all get equal value material
Or
Do we do an anonymous slab? No body knows who sent what ?
Again, we may not all get equal value
We could do a "theme" ie: agate, jasper etc. (Boring)
Or 1 person is responsible for sending out the material to everyone and then we rotate that every month. (Too complicated?)
To me let's say for example I wanted to send out a slab of larimar then I'm ok with whatever the person that received that slab does with it.
I know for a fact I've got some really nice stuff and not so nice stuff. Am I willing to part with some of the nice stuff ? Probably There are people here, that don't have that, they are just getting started as we all were at one point. So I get that it may not all be "equal" value. I guess that's the risk and maybe part of the fun

Here is a thought too
As the wire wrappers have a thread going
What if this is strictly metal smith?
(No holes drilled 😅 )

I was thinking this would be fun and hadn't considered "value" of whatever slab I'd send. I like the challenge of having to create something from a particular slab, also seeing what others choose to do with what they're given. For me it's more about the challenge than the value.
ETA: does it have to be limited a piece of jewelry? There's so many things we can do with rock.

I’d be down for any of this tbh. I just need a minute to think about how the best way to implement it so as to everyone comes out a winner. But I’d definitely be down to do metal smithing. Something I’ve been wanting to pull the trigger on for a while now.

I wasn't intending it to sound like it necessarily needed to be "equal value" on the slabs...I just didn't know what the expectations were...or should be. I remember going through some of the old slab exchange threads...and my jaw was on the floor when I saw what kinds of material were being exchanged.

The metal smith appeals to me.
Maybe do a theme. One month earrings, next pendant, bracelet and so on.
I'd still like to incorporate using a slab someone sends.
I think it would be fun and a good way to challenge myself and work on my skills

As Nate just said
"It's throwing an unknown variable into the equation"
Ok, I finished his sentence 😁

What if the slabs being exchanged had a max value, so that really high end material just never comes into play? What would be a reasonable slab price range that would allow everyone who wants to participate?

I'm not sure a max value will work, either. A lot of people have no idea the real value of their slabs.
I think we're talking about 2 different things- some kind of themed thing for metal workers (which is a great idea!) and a slab swap.

I've pretty much given up on this idea

I’d like to see a thread where RTHlings posted something they had made. That would be the only rule. Could be jewelry, a machine, a tool, a new process. No trading. No contest. No voting. No prizes. Just eye-candy for the rest of us. No sweat!!
A little like show and tell. The I Made It thread.

Just eye-candy for the rest of us. No sweat!! A little like show and tell. The I Made It thread. Isn't that what the premise of most of the Forum is? If someone wanted to do that, that's fine by me. But personally, I like looking at the individual threads about someone's creation, no matter what it is. There's a lot to be taken from seeing the subsequent comments and discussion, and in some instances, I even learn something. And, with dedicated threads, it helps members in their searches about given topics or items. I'd hate to see a really nice "something" get lost in a compilation thread, not getting the exposure it might get with an individual thread. That's just me. Now, if the thread was self-policed to being only pictures and no commentary, I could see it working. If that was done, I'd encourage folks to provide a link to the thread that discusses the project itself...kind of a visual "index" sort of thing.

MsAli I don't think you should give up. I think 2 competitions type things could be done. You should host a metal working challenge or competition. I don't think we've had one and I think it's about time we did.
The slab thing can be hashed out, too.
