It is for polishing cabs, looks like they were using chrome oxide as a polish. Similar to a spool polisher. Update: Found ad for it.

Thanks so much @azrockgeek. I have some jade I've not been able to get polished properly and I had this all along.

I would have never guessed it had leather on it. It's hard! So now does anyone know how to use this. Does it run dry or do I spray it a bit first? I've been all over Google and can't find anything on it.

I've been all over Google and can't find anything on it. Spray it and get it damp. Respray when it starts drying out again. When you start to feel the drag on the stone, that's when the polishing happens. If you let it dry out too much, you can "burn" your stone. You want to let it drag for just a few seconds and respray. Just a little so you can get to the drag part again.

rockbrain. Yup. Chrome oxide on a leather wheel. That one looks like it’s got a lot of life left in it. I would check the leather for drying/cracking. Some oil might be appropriate on the leather. I think some diamond extender is mineral oil based. Chrome oxide is an excellent polish for some rocks. I think Vince @hummingbirdstones2 said it best that you can expect to be as green as Kermit’s ass after using it.

As the little pamphlet says for polishing Jade, also very useful for quite a few hard to polish things, some of the Jaspers for example. When nothing else seems to work give this a go. Use it damp, not wet.

I have one of these I use with chrome oxide paste for polishing jade. I make sure to wear latex gloves and a plastic apron when I use it. Chrome oxide is a bugger to clean off your hands or anything else! And it easily smears onto anything you touch. I don't like it.

I ordered a chromium oxide bar. Hopefully that will work. Has anyone used the "green polish" from Harbor Freight? It looks like its chromium oxide but never says what it is in the description. It's cheap, in stock locally and comes in an applicator container that looks like a big Chap Stick.

If I were going to order Chrome Oxide in any form, I'd order this: kingsleynorth.com/the-battstik-polish-charging-stick.html They're expensive, but you can be frugal with them and you only use a tiny bit of water. See Jon Rolfe's website for more info: www.battlap.com/battstik.htmlI think it was Patty liveoak that uses the cerium battstick.

hummingbirdstones, Kingsleynorth is a 404 dead link for me and when I do a search there all that comes up is the powder.

Yup, I went to town & got all the Battstik flavors, and use them on my end lap exclusively.
The chromium is a lot less messy to use than mixing the power with water in a cup.
My only complaint about the Battstik in general, is now a year + later the cerium for example is starting to get a little dry.
Still perfectly use-able, since I'm putting a little on the lap & then spraying it with water.
BUT, it's a little bit pain to get out of it. Doesn't push out easy like it did to begin with . I've taken to use a popsicle stick to get some out.
I do store them in individual ziplocs, so I don't think that's it.
I guess I just need to polish more & use them up faster.
But I'd still recommend them as a less messy way to go all around.

I got a 404 too, but then I typed Battstick in the search box and it came up. Try that. Here's a list of all of the dealers that carry Jon's products: gearloose.co/dealers/You can also order it directly from him here: gearloose.co/shop/

Looks very similar to ZAM! polish. Love that stuff. rockbrain - You've got the lapidary virus now. Good luck, hopefully your case is not terminal to the bank account but I can't guarantee it.

I’m a bit late to this thread I know. I’ve seen this before I know:
The wheel and the dust impregnated in to the leather is exactly like the strop block marketed by knivesplus dot com, and I might add that if you like your pocket and field knives sharp enough to dry shave the hair off your arm, crazy sharp edged, one of these blocks will be the best thing you’ve ever done for your blades.
