Do you think more water would help or hurt with the triangular shape? I get a lot of them also. I am going to try the marbles and see what happens to them.

Is anyone getting triangular shape with barrels that are round inside? If I remember correctly when I put marbles in the 3lb Lorteone barrels they just get smaller. I think it might just be the ones that are octagon shape inside. Going off my memory is not always the safest bet!

These guys are worn down real small. They're about 3/8 of an inch on a large dimension. The marble with them in this picture is a standard size. What they all started off as That's interesting!

I was going to make some obscure reference to the way a rotary engine works, but I got to thinking that perhaps it just has to do with the micro crystalline structure of the silica material being tumbled. Very interesting dilemma.

My guess would be material prone to conchoidal fractures. I've seen several duck heads appear in my first batches of tumbled obsidian.

What they all started off as Well, I guess I am no Sherlock Holmes when it comes to observation and memory. I emptied my 3 and 12 pound Lortone barrels today and noticed that the 3 pounder is round with 6 semi-circular ridges the length of the barrel and the 12 pounder is not octagonal but has 10 sides on the inside. Now, I guess I am going to have to dig up some marbles and put them in both barrels and see if there is any difference. How long did it take you to deform the marbles to the duck bill state?

More food for thought. This is the Lid from my 12 Lb Thumler's barrel. I see a pattern here.

And no it is not worn thru. I glued a sheet of 1/4" acrylic over the original lid when it wore thru. I coated it in flex seal (which is wearing off after 5 years of 60/90 grinding). The acrylic is probably worn about 1/3 of the way.

The answer is obvious! No, I don't know what that means either, but I was thinking about Sand Dunes. Wind blows around the edges and heavily down the middle, Perhaps something like that is happening?

I was using some glass Marbles as tumbling media and noticed that some of them were getting flat on one side.
Figure what is happening is they are getting stuck on one end, or they are getting stuck in some resonate tumble action where they are repeating a cyclic motion over and over in the barrel.
So everyday I take the barrels off the tumblers and flip them end-over-end a few times to help prevent this from happening. Almost everytime I do this, the sound of the tumbling changes.
Haven't used marbles in awhile, so I really don't know if it's truly working.

That's a great idea...flipping the barrels during the tumble. As random as tumbling rocks are, I'm sure there is a bit of a pattern that forms when they are constantly flipping in the same barrel position against the same rocks.
