realrockhound just stirring the embers? I would say you gave the fire pit a good kick and we all get to watch the sparks fly haha. Gorgeous material and cab in the works, I can't wait to see it finished. Thanks tommy. Fingers crossed I can pull this off. Skip the the 3,000. Some material hates 3,000 and I guess fire obsidian is one of them. If you have an 8,000 wheel try that instead, but first go back down to your 1,200 and make sure all the scratches are out on that wheel.

Funny you say that because now that I think about it, this guy named world of rockhounds who said he stops at 1200

You had to keep an eye on the grandkids and I gotta keep an eye on my pup. Lil bugger got into my pile and sliced his pad open. Lil knuckle head bled for two weeks 🤦♂️ Cool cab btw.

Thanks for the links. If that doesn't inspire anyone- I don't know what will.

I'm still trying but I'm afraid I'm not going to have an entry. I managed to carve out a little bit of time on the two weekends before I left for Florida. I got a lot of good looking obsidian cabs done. I didn't get any photos taken. I packed up about 15 cabs to bring with me photo and decide which one I want to use. I can't find them. I have a feeling that they never actually got into the luggage. I had my daughter look for them at the house and was going to have them mailed to me if she found them but no luck. It's just a bummer because I had so many done and had several nice ones with different material. At least picking the material accomplished what I wanted to. I got a lot of practice doing obsidian and I got some real nice shine out of some of them.

I want to have a knapping area to attempt to work on muscle memory and make stuff that resembles what came out of that class a few years ago. i would have to build a dog/child fence around it and still probably lay a tarp down to catch it all just in case. Thinking about bringing the bucket-o-tools and try to beg a refresher course off of Emory while we're in Prineville, but I doubt he'll be able to anyway. Oh and BTW, the guy who started out with the vendor who had the medical emergency and ended up sharing Emory's space said go from worn 600 grit straight to cerium. If I ever get my woefully inadequate preform to the wheels I'll try that.

Anyone else think they are gonna make it? I’ve put too much time into this dang cab now, so I’ll submit something even if it does have scratches 😂. Another issue I found is that my wheels are still too new. But 1200 does the trick good enough. Blows my mind how my 3000 will still leave scratches. I haven’t cabbed much obsidian so this has been one heck of a learning curve. Next time I think I’m throwing the suckers in a tumbler.

If I can get some sleep on the flight home, I may be able to get it domay have to submit as is 😅 Throwing it in a vibe would be tempting

I didn't have any obsidian rough or slabs so I was expecting to sit this one out. But then a few days ago I stumbled onto this slab of Fireworks Obsidian and immediately knew what I wanted to do with it. I saw the red "orbs" as stars that were either causing streams of hot coronal material to fall onto their surfaces, or they were expelling hot streamers into space. My astronomy is a little wonky but that's what the patterns said to me.
When this volcanic material cooled it still had a fair amount of gas in it. That porosity helps to create the 'texture' of the patterns, although it detracts from the polish somewhat.

This obsidian is giving me a heck of a time. Something occurred to me tonight. Am I supposed to be pushing the cab into the soft wheels? Like enough to depress the surface a bit? I have the typical 2 hard and 4 soft wheels, soft being 280, 600, 1200, 3000. My wheels are still fairly new. I could probably count the cabs I've made on my fingers with maybe a few toes thrown in. The soft wheels are fairly stiff, it takes quite a bit of force for me to depress them. Tonight I almost started a new cab but instead took a "done" one that I wasn't too happy with and went backwards on the wheels, also tried a couple different polishes (cerium and tin oxide), still not good, so went backwards again, finally I was just between 1200 and 3000 and couldn't seem to get the 1200 scratches out after many many minutes. I've got probably 4+ hours in this one cab. Finally, out of ideas, I decided to just push harder into the 3000 wheel. And that started working! I'm now fairly happy with this cab although it was still a practice one and not my intended piece. I haven't even polished it yet and am a bit nervous to mess with it any more as my previous polishes weren't helping any. Anyway, the pushing into the soft wheels, is that what I'm supposed to be doing all along?? I've been doing light touch, letting the tool do the work. Or is it just that it's obsidian combined with my fairly new wheels?

I was working obsidian on my new wheels about 3 weeks after I got the wheels...BUT...I had also worked a bazillion cabs in those weeks...so mine were pretty broken in already. New wheels cause a heck of a problem with obsidian...
