victor1941 When I first saw your pictures I was expecting your carved area to be on the back like you’ve done before and the dop wax on it also sent my thinking that way. I figured the design would show through a translucent obsidian which would be hard to photo without backlighting. It’s interesting you actually put it on the front instead. I can see how that would be kind of fun to play around with. Seems like you’d have to plan for a fairly low dome otherwise you’d lose some carving during the shaping. Anyway, it’s a neat cab.👍

opalpyrexia Your cab does remind me of those close up videos of the surface of the sun and the molten sprays coming off of it. Very nice material and cab. 👍

I feel like this month went quick. I hope everyone whose worked on a cab is able to either finish or find it. My normal Friday night cabbing time got eaten up by a home project instead. Hopefully I can find time this weekend however it is finally sunny and dry here for the first time this year and my house is in danger of being overcome by some very happy backyard weeds. I do have a cab done but it’s not the primo material I’m hoping to get to.🤞

rockbrain I just want you to know, hands down this was the most challenging theme for me to date. Apparently I can polish a turd, but ask me to polish volcanic glass and thats outside my realm of expertise lol. I have a fine specimen finished at this point thats ready to post after some glamor shots, but i'll never be 100% satisfied with it

khara, I kept a medium high dome by deepening the dremel cut design after I cut the dome. This was a semi translucent and crappy piece of material to work with but I wanted something for the contest other than a domed cab to make it more interesting. I am not even sure this cab qualifies because of the design. I also thought this might be a nice stone to place colored epoxy in the circle depressions. The stone is highly polished but the depressions are not.

Obviously not for premium material but it sounds like a fun crafty project to make use of some otherwise plain material. 👍👍

realrockhound It’s a “had to be there” rock. You know when you stop and take a picture of something great and then you look at the pic and it’s just not capturing it. If you show it to anyone they just won’t get how great that thing was. I never understood that about cameras. With all the advancements they still aren’t as good as the eye. The color that does show in your cab though is pretty cool. 👍

Agreed. Taking the picture is half the battle. I've had a hard time with obsidian since it shows every fleck of dust or air bubble contrasting with the black. But, that's why it's a good contest! I'm still trying to crank mine out... Got 24 hrs 😭

realrockhound make a video of your stone in the sun. That might show it off really well. From what I see, it looks great!

And I made it too. Lassen Rainbow from the Davis Creek area, AKA oil slick. That's what we call it anyway. Whoever cut it did a pretty good job, at first I thought it was electric blue because they cut with the stripes perfectly, Video to follow. The slab. The cab, not 100% but best obsidian I have ever done. Stopping at 1200 and going to cerium worked better than 600, and I used the normally unused part from the center 6" of my Richardsons 12" slow wheel to avoid possible contamination on the old elkskin leather, and because I couldn't find the cerium and the center was untouched. The slab video, and the reason cutting with the bands instead of at an angle can yield some pretty cool bullseyes.

Wow! Last time I looked at this I didn't think there was going to be much of a competition. Some very impressive entries. Congratulations to everybody who participated.

With that the contest draws to a close with a surprising 8 beautiful entries Thank you everyone! I'll get the voting set up as soon as I can - I'm working three long days in a row starting today so I'll do the best I can.

I'm really rushing through this so please someone tell me if I missed an entry - now before it's too late! Edit: I double and triple checked it and I'm certain I got all of the entries in this time.
