This was in a box with opals is it?

Does not look like opal. Looks like it already converted in to a chalcedony. Check the density to make sure. Opal has a much lower density and gains density as it loses water and starts to crystallize in to a chalcedony.

Chalcedony is basically agate without its normal formations, like banding, Druzy quartz, or other inclusions.

Agates by definition are chalcedonies that have alternating curved bands of color. Therefore, a lot of chalcedonies such as "moss agate", "plume agate", etc. are not true agates by definition.
