Hi all- I found some ilmenite and monazite this afternoon. According to the google they are around a 6 and 5 mohs scale respectively and I'm having trouble figuring out if these can be tumbled successfully, so any guidance would sure be appreciated.

I’ve never heard of anyone rumbling either one before. The monazite I’ve seen is completely full of tiny internal fractures so not sure how you would get past those if yours is like the stuff I’ve seen. I have tumbled andalusite and the results were lackluster due to the same reason: a bazillion tiny fractures.

Thanks! Haven't tumbled yet, thank goodness. Guess I'll set them aside and just enjoy the sparkly stuff.

What kind of abrasive are you considering for tumbling?

All I have is the standard grit which off hand I cannot remember the size of and a Lortone tumbler.
