We are a brand-new children's science museum in Kona, Hawaii. Our mission is to connect visitors to Hawai’i Island through hands-on exploration of science that is all around us using hands-on, open-ended play experiences. We got a donation from a local geology teacher of his rock collection - three truckfulls worth. Mostly it's geodes from Oregon, and Thunder Eggs from Arkansas. One of the local middle schools started a geology club and they come every week to the museum to sort through the collection, and to use the flat lap tools to polish the geodes, and nodes, that are already cut. We don't have a saw, much less a saw that kids can use... That's on our wish list.
The middle schoolers were learning about tumbling using a nat geo tumbler, and some grit we ordered online. But since this is a museum, we were inspired to build them a bigger rock tumbler. After casting about on Pinterest we came up with a design using car tires, and we build what we are calling "the Biggest rock tumbler on YouTube"
Check us out and support our mission to get kids interested in geology!

Very cool! That big rock tumbler will be much more fun for the kids than a National Geographic tumbler! If you are able to get multiple stages running at the same time, it will be easy to show the kids what happens at the various stages. The only problem will be finding enough to tumble in the islands!
Good luck with the new museum!

Cool tumbler. I’ve a friend working on a bicycle powered tumbler….. 😄 Ok is it going to be a mobile bike or a stationary one? Seems mobile would be much more fun if you live somewhere that you can bike regularly! Wonder if the periods of inactivity will be a problem… 🤔
