Hello from the Texas hill country. We read that Llano Tx was somewhat famous for finding gems so we took the 45 min ride and started looking. Didn’t find any but found some interesting rocks and thus started our rockhounding hobby. We got a screen, hammer, chisels and a magnifying loop. We also made a 45 min trip to Mason looking for blue topaz. No luck with that either but found some cool looking rocks. Went not too far away to Willow City and picked up more rocks. We then learned of rock tumbling. Now we have 3 different tumblers going.

Welcome! I'm from Del Valle TX. We go hounding out in Llano and Mason often. We have been stumped when looking for topaz as well, so far . . . .

We were thinking about going to one of those ranches in Mason to find blue topaz. We saw a video about the place. $20 a head to get in and the owner admitted only about a 5% chance of finding any so we ruled that out. We took the drive down fly gap rd but I think we are just to inexperienced to even know what we are looking for

Welcome to the Forum from Southern California. Since you just started hounding, are you taking spray bottles with water to wet the rocks you're looking at? If you're not, it really makes a big difference in looking at wet vs. dry. If you already are, well good on you and never mind what I wrote.

Most of our rockhounding has been in rivers and streams. But I’ll add that to our list. Thanks for the tip
