I just got a C40 tumbler for my birthday and it is my first time with a big tumbler...previously ive used my 6 pound rotary or my TV10 vibe with a UV18 bowl on top. This beast is awesome and HUGE!!! My question is do you load by weight capacity or volume? Loading it for the first time, when it is 2/3 full, there is more than 40 pounds of rocks in there...and that is before adding the water. If you load by weight capacity, i would love tips on how to fill that bad boy 2/3 full without going over 40 pounds....my brain just cant seem to figure it out I would appreciate any tips that might help me figure this puzzle out...it is throwing me for a loop and i feel like im missing something or just being to "left brained" lol Tamara in Texas

Welcome to the Forum. For reasons I don't know, most, if not all, rotary barrels are sized by weight which adds confusion to lots of folks. And, if we were to simply go by the weight, we'd probably never get adequate fill. Your hunch is correct. Load by volume. That's the way things are usually done as far as I know. And, I double-checked your manual. It IS by volume. lortone.com/cdn/shop/t/4/assets/C20_and_C40_Tumbler_Instruction.pdf?v=49928338008548838381524508938Good luck. ETA: tamaraintexas , I do find it interesting that in the Troubleshooting section of the manual, it reads to not exceed rated capacity if the barrel stops or is turning slowly. Hmmm. I wonder what that actually means? I've never weighed my 6lb barrels when full, but I know they were far heavier than 6 lbs. For peace of mind, you could always give Lortone a call and ask.

Lortone doesn't answer the phone or return voicemails.
Good luck with the new tumbler! That sounds awesome.

This is the response i just got from Lortone...im so confused. I spent two hours weighing everything to try to get it meet the weight capacity and be at the volume it needs to tumble well and i just couldn't do it. I must be missing something important.
"Thank you for your email! It is by weight. A loaded 40 lb. Barrel should weigh no more than 64 lbs. (including the weight of the barrel)."

So it would appear that the machine is "rated" for 64 pounds. How much does your loaded barrel end up weighing with water and grit? (Don't pour the grit into the water, just weigh that separately and add that amount to your subtotal.)

I’m going to go out there this afternoon and weigh it loaded. I spent probably an hour a few days ago trying to figure out how to load it to the correct volume and have it not exceed the weight and so far that has been an impossible task for me. Lol.

You are worrying for no reason. Just load it up and let it go. Even when tumblers are overloaded in general, a little push gets them going. The 1/3 hp motors seem like beasts on these And I can’t imagine having a problem.

One time I weighed both barrels when they were 2/3 fuill of rocks and had water and grit in there and each barrel weighed in at over 6 pounds. And that tumbler has been running like a champ, 24/7, for about 3 years now. I don't think I would worry about your beast of a tumbler. Lortone makes awesome tumblers, and I'm sure that one is no exception.

I really appreciate all the tips…I just weighed it and it is 7.8 pounds over fully loaded so I’m not going to sweat that. ❤️ it is turning great. I had to get my hubby to weigh it cause that bad boy is HEAVY 😂

I had to get my hubby to weigh it cause that bad boy is HEAVY 😂 That's why I asked for a total weight at the end of the day. While it doesn't make a difference, and it's more a curiosity thing, was your barrel weight at about 48 or 71? I agree with your assessment to just roll it as is. Just stay on top of maintenance related to oiling the bearings and making sure the belt doesn't slip. Things should go very well for you .
