Being a native Missourian I am a little embarrassed to admit I did not know "Mozarkite" is the state rock. I am going to research on where I can find this on a rock hunt sometime down the road. But in the Mean time I did find a store in AZ that sells by the pound and I have 3 lbs on the way. Problem is the these are Knapping Roughs approx 4x7x1 inch. Too big for my Nat Geo Hobby or Harbor Freight Dual 3 Lb barrel tumbler. (the only tools I have for this hobby at the moment.) Well at least I will have some samples for my rock collection. Wondering if I should get a tile saw or a hammer and chisel? Why am I hearing that Taco Bell Dog, I think I need a bigger tumbler

I bought some a couple years ago at the Kansas City Rock show. I think I got it from one of the Kansas City rock clubs but haven't seen it since then. There are rock shows in that part of the state but you could just as easily collect your own if you are in the area. You might do a search for rock shops in the area.

I've had some before. You don't see it often, but I think it's really pretty. I think it's chert, but don't quote me.

Tile saw works well. Hammer and chisel only if you don't care how it breaks. Unfortunately, in my experience with tumbler that can accommodate bigger pieces, the risk of damage (chips) is high unless you run the big piece alone with a lot of media.

LOL From Wikipedia: Mozarkite is a form of chert (flint). It is the state rock of Missouri. The name is a portmanteau, formed from Mo (Missouri), zark (Ozarks), and ite (meaning rock).

My advice on breaking rocks is, just break a few, not all of it. Save some for cabbing maybe, or for the larger tumbler later. I regret breaking some of the rocks I had.

At the moment I do not have a cabbing machine, out of my price range, Right now, I Just have the National Geographic Hobby Tumbler with a 1 pound barrel and a Harbor Freight Duel barrel tumbler with two Three pound barrels. I just bought a tile saw from Harbor Freight for $60 bucks. That should help control making the rocks smaller. Probably a bit slower the just breaking them and hopping the the best. So far I have not found any clubs or groups that I can hook up with, the closest ones listed on the internet are nearly two hours drive from me. I did find a group about an hour away that specializes in Mozarkite and they have a rock show coming up in September. I'm still on the look out for others that may be near by that I can hook up with.

Where in Missouri are you? I live in West Central Missouri about 50 miles east of Kansas City. Between Road, Bridge, and new building construction in KC and Suburbs driving in the area has been a real nightmare.

I think all of us who live in rural towns that are becoming overcrowded know exactly what you're talking about.

This is the club I could find that would be closest to you, I think: showmerockhounds.com/about/

This is the group that I found that focuses on Mozarkite and has a show coming up in September. www.mozarkite.com/index.htmlI will check out Show Me rockhounds after the construction situation settles down but I really hate going into Downtown KC.

I ordered this times 3 thinking the rocks would about 4x7x1 and that I would be able to cut the pieces on my 7" tile saw. This is what came in today, the smaller piece can be cut down on my tile saw but the larger piece is just too big for what I have. Any idea's Note I do not have a chisel or large hamer.
